Sweet Peppers and Chilis
Options
Does anyone here have great success with peppers?
My bell peppers have lost all their leaves and look on their last legs. They don't have any aphids on them and the greenhouse is well ventilated. Also my habanero chili plants are still quite small, bushy, but small. I sowed them in March
The Jalapeno, Santa Fe Grande, and Big Jims look fine, and are about 14" high with plenty of flowers.
I love peppers and would like to become competent at growing them, or is it just pot luck? Tips and secrets welcome:D

i allways have good success with chilli's
this year, something ate them all when they were about 3" high0 -
I've decided not to bother trying to grow either chilli or pepper again from seed. A few weeks ago Lidl had a decent sized chilli plant which already had chillies growing on it - picked about 1/2 doz off straight away. Since then I have picked about 40 more, and there are still dozens on, and still flowering. I can't remember how much the plant was though. I planted some seeds a long while ago, and the plants are about 10 inch high!!!!!
The pepper plant I bought has quite a few peppers on, but they seem to be taking forever to swell.0 -
hi there if you have a look at my thread home grown veg part two you can see my pepper and chilli plants ,the pepper plant has about nine peppers on it and the chilli plant has about three chilli's on it i am keeping them in the greenhouse , i make sure they are watered twice a day at least ,and i give them a little shake every day ,apparently it helps with pollination, they seem to be thriving
.good luck with your's

I must have got really lucky, I bought some romero peppers from the shop (to eat, not plants or seeds) and planted a load of the seeds about 6 weeks ago in a little shop bought compost, now I have about 20 miniature peppers (still growing) and a number of healthy looking plants, not only that I bought a couple of cheap chilli plants from Lidl when they were on special offer and they are full of fruit, we had some of them in a curry the other evening (fruity with a bit of heat at the same time, sop I seem to have done quite well (so far says he touching wood)0

Were these the one's sold in 6's?
I bought some too and three of them are going great guns on my kitchen windowsill. I haven't cut any yet - I was wondering how big they would grow before they were full size or ready to use.
What size did yours get to before you cut them? Any idea what type they are?0 -
I am growing about 80 chillis/peppers this year - I had counted 96 2 weeks ago but have given a few away.
My method is to keep them pot bound for a few days before potting on and when I pot on, only to the next size up pot. Some are being kept in smaller pots deliberately to keep them pot bound to hasten the fruiting.
I always nip off the first flower; this scares it into producing more.
Keep on the dry side of watered, don't leave to wilt too often and don't drown it.
If a leaf looks crinkled or misshapen it probably has greenfly, so put it outdoors for a few days to let other bugs get at the greenfly.
I stake mine with those green plant stakes; esp the ones outdoors.
At this time of year, as they are mainly flowering or producing, they get fed every second watering with tom food and I am trying a tom feed and general feed mix for every second feeding [it was recommended and so I'm trying it].
I have 1/3 outside on the decking by the canal and 1/3 in the greenhouse with the other 1/3 that I have no room for put in various locations in the garden and on the lottie.
I've started eating the early ones, Glebe Kirschen Yellow Chillis; a couple of weeks ago it was lacklustre but the one i used this week blew our heads off.
Last year my chillis didn't start fruiting until much later and I ended up drying them and making my own chilli powder - which if all goes to plan I'll be able to make much more of this year.0 -

I had reasonable luck with mine last year and got a good crop of Jalapeno, and Apache, but this year seems all to pot and my sweet pepper loss has really upset me:mad:~~~~~~~~~~~~Halifax, taking the Xtra since 1853:rolleyes:~~~~~~~~~~~~0 -
