Thank heavens for this thread! I couldn't find the address for the yahoo group anywhere so had to read through this one again!
My brood are loving the keifir and eating it every morning in their muesli with a bit of honey. When they need 'filling up' during the day we also make a smoothie with it - it's got to the stage that mine tastes almost identical to natural yoghurt.
After a bit of neglect (I got ill after mixing wines) mine are so well recovered they are converting 4 pints of milk into keifir at great speed (less than a day).
For those who are looking to give it a go you might want to think about joining the yahoo group http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Fermented-foods-UK/ (put the link in again to save me rummaging through the thread again if AOL plays up!!) I'm certainly glad I did!

PS Has anyone else tried freezing the grains? I'm thinking of giving it a go as I don't want to throw any away, but 4 pints is a bit much, even with my lot!January '06 Grocery Challenge (4th - 31st) £320.Week 1 - £73.99 Week 2 £5.10 (so far)

I got my grains today, and it says to put them in a screw top plastic beaker, not too tight as there may be some gas! Is this what you have found best to use or can I get away with any kind of glass or a thermos as I have a wide mouth one.
Many thanx in advance.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Hi larmy,
I have merged your thread with the existing thread we have on Kefir, as it helps other Old Style readers to find all the advice on the same subject in one thread. As always, posts are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

I am back again with yet another question???? Once you have your kefir thickened, do you drink it that way at the warm temperature or can you strain it, take out the blobby, cool in fridge and then add whatever and drink.
Eg. It is only the one that is culturing that needs to be in a warm environment?
have I got this right. I have had a tummy bug for the last two days, the kefir is up in the airing cupboard, but I am feeling very squeamish about any kind of food let alone luke warm bacteria!
Help anyone???Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
