Where can I get cheap plain flour that is unlikely to have little magotty looking bugs in?
I just had to throw out several bags of flour (and everything else that was open in the same cupboard) after discovering said bugs in one.
From Emma, who is feeling slightly sick at the thought of what I have used the flour for previously without sieving it!Nemmer Nossage :rotfl: :j

Stick the bag in the freezer overnight and it will kill off the eggs so they don't hatch.0 -
does any one know if you can bake a sponge cake in a tin can (baked bean) as this is the exat shape i need0

I'm sure you can, but would have to keep an eye on it for timing. Check it after about 13 mins - if not done then, give it another couple of mins..0

I always make cookies that have flour, butter, oats an egg and then either chocolate chunks or dried fruit in them. Do you think it would be okay to freeze these either before or after cooking as always go far too fast!0

Hi,
I'd like to try making weetabix cake, but would prefer using sugar rather than sweetener. Can I substitute easily, and how much sugar would I need?
Thanks.0 -
I made a carrot cake last week, which although was ok, for a first attempt, I came up against a bit of a problem which I'm hoping someone can help me resolve.
I've got a narrow oven, 50cm wide, and discovered (too late) that the two 8" tins wouldn't fit on the same shelf. I ended up cooking the tins seperately, one at a time.
The oven can be very hit and miss with achieving the right temperature and timings can get messed up and things take much longer when more than one thing is in the oven at the same time. I've bought a little oven themometer to help find the best shelf position for temp control.
Would it work cooking the tins on seperate shelves and then swapping them over half way through, or would this result in two unevely baked halves? Also would this dry the cake out as it would probably be in the oven longer as multiple things don't seem to cook together well?
I know I can cook a carrot cake in one tin, but it's more for the times when two tins have to be used e.g victoria sponge or other layer/sandwich type cakes.0 -

I've done this before and the cakes came out perfectly OK - as long as you keep an eye on them so they don't end up under / over cooked I don't think it will be a problem. I do have a fairly good oven, though, so it might be different if yours is playing up anyway - probably the best option would be to try it on something that doesn't matter too much and see how you get on.

Yes that does help, thanks. I'm still at the experimenting/trying things out stage anyway, so just wanted to make sure it was worth trying, or whether it would not really work and be a waste of ingredients.0 -
I have run out of whole meal flour which I need for a crumble recipe. I do have strong wholemeal flour for bread making. Can I use this instead? A friend is coming for supper and this was to be pudding - she is due in 1 hour so nipping out to the shops - too far.0
