Official MoneySavingExpert.com Insert:

Several Borders stores are closing down with 50% off everything excluding food, magazines and Paperchase.

Stores include London's Oxford Street and London Colney (near St Albans). To find out if your local store is one of them check out its local store page by using the Borders store finder.

Thanks to MoneySaver Froggitt for the spot. Back to their original post...

Near St Albans/Shenley. J22 M25.

CLOSING DOWN SALE STARTS TODAY

All books, DVD, games, CDs etc, including chart. Closes 8th August. When its gone, its gone.

Everything except Starbucks, newspapers, Paperchase.

50% gets taken off the basket right at the very end, literally halving the cost of the basket, so Im assuming that the "buy 1 get 1 half price" deals are in addition to 50% off.

Tons of stuff for ebayers.

Ooh eck that's going to leave a big hole. Was only in there the other night and it looked pretty busy. It's so easy to buy books online now, play, amazon, but this'll be a big loss and it's a great shame to lose a real shop you can go into and browse what's available :(

Don't say this to me! Am sooo broke right now! (LOL)

Have read on the shop-but-don't-drop thread that the Boarders Oxford Street is indeed closing. (V.sad about this) so please, raid the fast store before I find myself inside, basket in tow...(I need to know that everything has gone and theres no point me visiting!)

The same thing is happening at Llantrisant Borders too - shame, it's a great shop. They will also be closing on 8th August, same 50% off deals.
    Blagged: free samples of handwash from Molton Brown; booklet of walks from Brecon Carreg;
Free Diabetes monitor, free bee-friendly seeds, a MINI coin and a splash-proof book from Radox.:T

I went in yesterday just by chance to meet a friend for Starbucks - I don't think I've ever seen it so busy. Wonder what's going to be there instead?

Agree it is such a great shop, but I guess they weren't making the money they hoped as its normally fairly quiet.

Blanchardstown in Dublin, Llantrisant, London Colney, Oxford Street, and Swindon. There are closing down sales in all of them, probably all 50% off but check their individual websites before travelling.

New Look have bought the stores in case that's of interest to anyone! :cheesy:
  • The ones in Lakeside and Becton closed a little while back and i still miss them - use to love going there with my sis on a saturday morning for coffee and a browse through the books.

Unless you are crooked and not declaring your income you are not going to be able to sell and post and pay tax and fees on items bought at half retail price. (Even considering books being zero-rated.)
  • Swindon Borders is one of the shops closing to make way for (sigh!) New Look. People in the area are very unhappy about it. It's not because the stores are unprofitable apparently, but they had a good bid from New Look and sold the leases of these 5 stores.
I can confirm that the 50% off sale is on in Swindon - my husband has made the most of it! The shop was very busy yesterday and at this rate it won't last till 8/9 August.
Borders did e-mail people on their mailing list with a notice about the sale in their local shop, so lots of people will know about it.

Wow - thanks for this (and well done for making it into Martin's weekly email!) - hubby works not far from Oxford Street store so have emailed him to stop in after work...he does love a bargain so he will likely be thrilled! :)

Shame though - I like Borders...though like many have bought books online for years now - so not surprising I suppose.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
