I have a tricky decision. Today I got a call offering 10 days freelancing, at £200/day. Trouble is it has to be fitted in over three weeks from 21 June. So I would have to take leave from my job. It's not a great time to ask for leave as a colleague is away, and it would look odd to ask for it at such short notice when most people book well ahead. And it would use up all my remaining holiday entitlement for the year. So what do I do? I can't decide!

Can any of it be done over weekends?

It is a lot of money to turn down, but I can see your predicament!

No, unfortunately it is covering for someone who is on holiday and it has to be in the office and they ideally want 2 days 1 week, 5 the next and 3 the week after. But they are prepared to be a tincy bit flexible. I think the maximum I can ask for is 2 days off each week, and even that would raise eyebrows. But I can't really turn down the money either. I will have to sleep on it and discuss with my boss tomorrow. I have one tiny inkling of hope that she will understand if I confess about the need for the money.

I would def consider opening up about needing the money - no need to mention debt specifically, but mentioning that OH is out of work etc would be easier!

Fingers crossed - are you going to speak to them tomorrow?

Yes, as I said I would get back to the person offering work tomorrow. I think I will come clean to my manager. She has herself wangled some unpaid leave to visit her boyfriend, having used all her leave entitlement, so she can't really be too hardcore about enforcing the rules over leave! But I would not want our chief exec to know about it. I will have to have the conversation first thing tomorrow and just see how it goes.

Seaxwyn, I wasn't on here yesterday evening, so I've only just seen this - thats an awful lot of money! I can understand not wanting to use leave for it, but, but ...... hope it works out for you.

Seaxwyn, hope you have managed to sort something out with your boss. It would be great if you could manage to do the cover work.

    Fingers crossed x
