im considering buying a freeview box for my portable telly upstairs in my bedroom as this seems a good money saving idea instead of getting another cable line put in and saving the call out charge to fit it + the monthly box rental, the question is will it work on a rather ropey old portable tv ariel or will i have to fork out for a decent ariel to go in the loft? as a mere woman i dont do these "electrical type things" very well! :o

Think you'll need a 'proper' aerial, cos the freeview box works by picking up the signals from the transmitters to get the programmes...that's what i had to do....and make sure you're in a freeview area first, or you won't get any programmes on it!!

Our freeview box in the bedroom works on the small cheap aerial that came with the tv.We may be just lucky though as alot of people need a proper aerial.

thanks for your help, i didnt even know there was freeview areas, i have checked my postcode and thats ok, will definately buy one as they are only £27 i think the best plan of action is to try out the small ariel on the tv first if that doesnt work then i`ll have to fork out for a loft ariel, im off to go buy one :j

You can always get an aerial with a booster generally available for about a tenner

Haven't time to check all the threads, but a quick search of the Techie Forum on "freeview" threw back these results:

    Hiya :)

I reckon that our techie board is the best place for your post and, with a bit of luck, someone will come along with exactly the answer you need :)

If they talk too technical just offer them a slice of home made cake and ask them to make it easier for you :)

    Good luck.

Indoor aerials only work if you are in a strong signal area anyway - for digital TV you need a REALLY good signal. You may find a loft aerial may not be much good either, especially if you loft is lagged with foil backed sheets.
The best bet is ask around and see what your neighbours are using.
