Swine 'flu - What economic impact?

According to the BBC, there were 100,000 new cases last week http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8163930.stm
The rate of infection apears to be growing exponentially. If you catch it you're advised to stay of work for a minimum of 5 days. It may be better to catch it now (according to GP) so you have some immunity should it return in winter.Favourite hobbies: Watersports. Relaxing in Coffee Shop. Investing in stocks.

By their warm and comfy duvets which, thanks to media pressure, did a rapid crash course on flu diagnosis.
TBH, this is not the weather it would be worth pulling a sicky in: too dismal, what would you do with the time off?0 -
Swine Flu Error Girl Tells Of NHS Nightmare
A girl whose meningitis was misdiagnosed as swine flu has told Sky News how she had to pretend she had taken an overdose so paramedics would take her to hospital. Even then, 17-year-old Gemma Drury, from Brimington, Chesterfield, was discharged from hospital after another misdiagnosis and told to go home to bed.
Remember when "we only have 24 hours to save the NHS"?

Given this was last week, I would assume by a telephone conversation with their doctor. The IMF are recommending that a small percentage of people who report flu symptoms are swabed, to see what percentage of people displaying flu symptoms actually have swine flu.
In any case, it doesn't really matter from an economics perspective if they are ill or not, it has much the same effect on the economy.
Your signature seems very odd today, what's the story?“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

If it's anything like where we live, it's over the phone.
I've been ill for a couple of weeks, well 3 to be precise and when I rang the surgery 2 weeks ago for a an appointment the receptionist had a list of questions.
Is it an ongoing condition - no
Do you have a temperature - yes
Do you have an upset stomach - yes
Do you have a headache - yes
Do you have aches and pains - yes
Do you have a sore throat - no
Have you been in contact with anyone who has swine flu - wish I knew
Have you recently travelled overseas - yes - the US
You've answered yes to more than 3 of the questions - a doctor will ring you and speak to you.
Doctor rings and speaks to me - Do you think you might have swine flu - no but your receptionist seems to think I might.
Doctor - I think you have a virus - me - ok
I didn't have swine flu - I went to an out of hours clinic that weekend. I actually have a bacterial infection of the soft tissue which fortunately isn't MRSA - which presented most of the symptoms of "coming down with something"
This was on the day that the gov't announced the cessation of swabbing and testing and from then on it was diagnosis by phone. In our area at least.
I would imagine most of the 100k people don't have swine flu - but suspected swine flu - some will have it and some won't.
You aren't allowed near our surgery if you think you might have swine flu and rightly so. So the diagnosis is carried out remotely.
The worry for me is that the surgery had been my first port of call - and the doctor had diagnosed a virus over the phone and I was told to take paracetamol- the diagnosis was wrong. I'm on my 3rd course of antibiotics.0 -

Of the 100,000 people diagnosed with swine flu i would hazard a guess that 40 actually have it.0 -

840 patients in hospital, of which 63 of which are in critical care.
I would hazard a guess that you're not a Doctor.Favourite hobbies: Watersports. Relaxing in Coffee Shop. Investing in stocks.
