Swine 'flu - What economic impact?

Looks like the cat is out of the bag now, for all the spin and misinformation this is going to be serious so:

What will it do to the economy? More of the same with big purchases (houses, cars) put off?
Reduced output with people off work sick and to care?
Travel hit (risk of contagion and who wants to risk being ill while away?)
How about public events and venues, pubs, clubs, football matches etc

And what about the 'panic' effects - bulk buying, hoarding fuel etc

Or will it prove to be a storm in a teacup?
I think....

As I've said before, I've gone long with Dignity plc.

Also bought my FFP2-class valved masks (DIY builders masks are useless) and wrap-around clear safety glasses to limit aerosol contamination in public spaces. You'll need alcohol hand wipes to maintain cleanliness.

£1000 in notes in the safe, plenty of paraffin for the stove and storm-lantern, three weeks of food in store.

For swine flu? Seriously, I've been worse the morning after nights out than what they describe.

I would wait until the winter if I was you.

    You may regret that comment..

'Healthy' Briton Dies From Swine Flu Virus

A hospital patient from Essex has become the first Briton without underlying health problems to die after contracting swine flu.

The number of people in the UK who are thought to have died after contracting swine flu has doubled in the past three days to 15 - with dozens more critically ill.

This is going to be bad, very bad...

Exactly how bad is very bad?

Should I be putting operation 'secure the estate' into action?

Tens of thousands of people have it, that means hundreds of thousands who will be immune by Winter; both those that have it now and are confirmed so, and those who have been in contact with them and have it without realizing it. I'm really not that worried; of course if the facts change, then I'll change my position.

Just got my calculator out, and based on my admittedly poor maths, 0.15% of those with the illness (confirmed, so not all of them) have died. 0.01% of those who had the illness died whilst otherwise healthy. No cause for alarm yet.

Yes it's going to be bad.

In addition to your usual weekly/fortnightly rubbish pick-up, binmen are going to be wheeling along a giant trailer adorned with bodies whilst shouting 'Bring out yer dead!' at the top of their voices.

Some peoples family members are dying from it. Please show some (sincere) respect.

Yep. And given the demographics of those most at risks, peeps should really be making sure they have an up-to-date will and good life assurance. No point in leaving the bereaved with tricky intestate issues and having to sell the family home.
