You are quite right, Davesnave, in your understanding of my post.

ukcarper, the reason I would benefit from rising house prices is because I've done my upsizing, brought up my family and the only way I will want/need to move in the future will be to a smaller/cheaper property. The higher the price of my house, the more money I would release for spending on great holidays and other lovely things.

This however, for reasons I've stated, is not what I want. I've made provision for my future. I will hopefully be able to cope but I don't want to do so at the expense of the next generation. It does seem difficult for some posters to believe we're not all mad, greedy, house price rampers with an eye only to personal acquisition.

So when you downsize you will do so below the market price?

It's not a question of greed or ramping - as if this little forum, with a small group of people talking to each other could make any difference.

The argument is between people who believe house prices are determined by the blind operation of the market and those who appear not to understand what this means.

PN, I remember looking into the last two on your list the last time you brought them up. (Note I have not looked into the others)

Interesting that there were no recorded previous sales.
Let me remind you that asking prices are completely different from selling prices.

To be a bit facetious, if I was to put my properties up for twice their worth, would you think you were saving a fortune if I then offered them at half price?

Am I missing something here, are caravans not a depreciating asset like cars?

So hang on, your saying that property can only half in price, if it has a previous sale price to prove PN wrong?

But then, have used their valuation price to prove yourself right?

Graham, I was being facetious, even said so in the post.

Naturally you need to compare apples with apples or in this case sold prices with sold prices.
As you know, I've said often enough, asking prices can be largely irrelevant.

There are no previously recorded sold prices, so how can you say the price has halved?

I will let treliac answer this. However, I don't believe she, or I, think the market is anything other than 'blind,' or that the statistics regarding the readership of this forum are different from those stated daily in the stats.

What fun to see the bears stumble over themselves to explain why they got it spectacularly wrong on this.

Didn't the OP buy recently? Shame bears don't heed their own advice.

As for the source of the article, there is a good post here on the credibility of Moneyweek (http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.asp?mid=9558198&sort=postdate).

Didn't that odious horsey double-barrelled editor of Moneyweek also buy back into the housing market, but only having waited for the market to rise 15% above the April 2008 floor?

As an aside hasn't geoffky (the OP) gone on to buy his house?

Oh what a surprise.... he was just another poster fixated on what they wanted to happen rather than what they honestly thought would happen.
Still he's in good company, seems to be plenty of it around.
