Nah, that's fine. We're in Salford, but I'm aware that that is one big place. We're kinda spitting distance from what is technically classed at Manchester City Centre. Moved here a few years ago and love life up here - the gigs, eating and drinking out, walking to work, the culture, having a decent library, individual businesses. Bascially all the stuff we couldn't get on our doorstep where we used to live. Just really like the place - but sure we would have enjoyed moving to any other city just as much.
I had two job offers on the table when we decided we wanted to move from our small town in the Midlands, one oop north and one in London. The one in London paid about 60% more than the one up here (both very different jobs in different sectors I should add), but we worked out that we could still have a better standard of living up here. And so glad we made that decision as it was right for us.
Where abouts are you Carol?
Home Counties.
It suits us as (a) we're close enough to my family/friends, (b) we've got our kids into an excellent school - our main reason for moving and (c) we get to live within a reasonable commute of London but with views of fields.
Your picture of Salford/Manchester sounds nice though - better for those without kids, maybe? Not sure being close to any city centre would really suit us now.0 -

Schools..that's the killer. Cleaver and Mrs C don't have any kids yet....'kids-free', you can get by pretty much anywhere 'before kidis'.
What ones everyday life revolves around changes once kids arrive and they get to age 4/5.
I have a good friend ( late 30's) who has just had much longed for baby. She will not compromise on the area they live in (they don't own as way toooo expensive) as it's a fab area..great schools, area facilities...but they can't afford to live in it if they wish to own a house/flat.
They can only live there as the rent gets propped up with HB and tax credits as his wage is low...plus she wants to be SAH mum, despite being very qualified in her field, and not go back to work.
The average decent size family house (30's 3 bedders) costs 500k+.
Her OH earns 20k pa at a push.
But they want to live in that area as it's sooo nice (wouldn't we all) so they will be trapped by getting the top ups. She blames high house prices but I looked back at the prices in that area to 1997...and they were still way, way above average.
IF social housing were available to them (but there isn't any in that location even if they qualifiied) , she would probably refuse to live in it..........she had a utopian ideal of how she would like her life to be once motherhood came......
Would they move to Manchester for lower house prices?? I will ask next time I pop over.0 -

Y'see, that's the real issue, I wouldn't particulary want to bring kids up here. I'd want a garden, nearby parks, safer streets. But no plans for kids really, so shouldn't be an issue. But completely agree with you.
The trouble with our current position is that I love walking to work. Half an hour to chill, listen to a podcast or my music, say good morning to all the people brewing up by their canal boats on the way. After a good few years commuting I don't know if I could do it again!Your picture of Salford/Manchester sounds nice though - better for those without kids, maybe? Absolutely. And we have plenty of friends who, I'm sure, wonder why the hell we live here. So it isn't for everyone, but suits us just dandy. And, we're in 'average' jobs and can afford to have a nice life, which I think neatly brings us back on topic. Just.0 -

The thing is that there are plenty of utopian areas of Manchester too. A nice 3 or 4 bed house in Chorlton, Didsbury, Altringham, Worsley (in Salford I'll add) would all maybe be between £250k and £500k. Cheaper, but still not in reach of the £20k earners. And for some people they just can't seem to settle in one area if they know the area down the road is that much nicer...

IKWYM (I know what you mean...you complained about my acronym usage a while back)......some areas will always be out of reach to the majority.....shame, as they are the yummy, nice ones.
Does anyone know Worlds End Estate in Chelsea and what it is like nowadays? Are they all sold under RTB? There used to loads of council housing in central London...I guess it's all sold now.
Problem with my good friend is that she has never lived anywhere 'not so nice'....and now much wanted babby has arrived, wouldn't even consider it. Except, new partner just doesn't earn enough to support a SAHW and an ordinary 2/3 bed house in that location.
I should really be living in Leicester part of the week right now...but doesn't fit in with daughters last 3 years schooling. We moved her from London @ age 11, so need to see it through...her whole teen life is based here now.0 -

 7 bedrooms with one family bathroom and one extra toilet and one shower.....
To type over a link, you highlight the words you want to turn into a link and then press the world with a paperclip icon and then paste the url into the popup box.0 -
Local factors there I guess though, it'll be let to students for Sussex University. Hence the lack of bathrooms0

Even worse...how wealthy are these students?
For a little bit more you can rent this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-12388608.html?locationIdentifier=OUTCODE%5E230&pageNumber=1&backToListURL=%2Fproperty-to-rent%2Ffind.html%3FsearchType%3DRENT%26locationIdentifier%3DOUTCODE%255E230%26radius%3D0.0%26displayPropertyType%3D%26minBedrooms%3D%26maxBedrooms%3D%26minPrice%3D%26maxPrice%3D%26maxDaysSinceAdded%3D%26retirement%3D%26sortByPriceDescending%3D%26_includeLetAgreed%3Don%26primaryDisplayPropertyType%3D%26secondaryDisplayPropertyType%3D%26oldDisplayPropertyType%3D%26oldPrimaryDisplayPropertyType%3D%26oldSecondaryDisplayPropertyType%3D%26letType%3D%26letFurnishType%3D%26houseFlatShare%3Dfalse%26x%3D72%26y%3D15
