with regards to LH, and KLM especially, i just feel its annoying having to fly in the wrong direction to get to the USA. I prefer to go the direction i want to end up, so from MAN i'm limited with choices..

It's definitely strange, I've only done LHR-AMS-MIA one time and it's very odd having the in-bound layover in Europe at 6am. With KLM and Martinair nonetheless0 -

from Newcastle we have 4 options, Airfrance via Paris, get left on the tarmac for 30-40 mins (last two times) and then a bus to the terminal taking ages. BA to London and if you are lucky you dont have to get a bus or train to the right airport and then you have the old BA issues of lost luggage, drive to Manchester and the additional expense of a over night say or KLM via Amsterdam, KLM wins hands down. Just booked flights over Easter to Atlanta for £280 bargain.0
