Transatlantic - which airlire?

Basically (with the arguable exception of Virgin) there is no quality airline flying the transatlantic routes so they don't compete on quality, at least not in economy class. They compete on price instead. As a general rule I prefer the European carriers (wth the exception of Lufthansa) to the US ones, but the experience is going to be pretty similar whoever you fly with. So go for whichever is most convenient.
Transatlantic is totally different to the UK-East Asia-Australia routes, for example, where there are several good airlines and they have all had to up their game on quality of service, IFE etc.0 -
Of the three noted, I would go for Delta. Otherwise, I like KLM and Air France, and don't like Virgin. This is one of those things that is very much down to personal choice, so everyone will have a different view!Gone ... or have I?0

Be aware that the baggage allowance with Delta is one bag at 23kgs per person and the others are 2 bags at 23kgs.0

my work head offices is near delta home airport and anyone who travels has to book with them. Not one person who flys with them likes them and they hate the idea that we dont have to. Flown AA and they were ok but not as good as BA or KLM.
KLM are awful in my opinion. Anyway.. i'm sure if you did a survey of people in Atlanta, Delta would come out awful, also, if you did a survey of people in Philadeliphia, US Airways would come out awful, and if you did a survey of people in Chicago, AA would come out awful.. blah blah blah..
Hub Cities are where the airline has a lot more flights than normal, and delays might be more common than other airlines at the same airport, just because of the sheer number of flights, and passengers flying..

I generally prefer to fly Northwest over the pond, as they have on demand video and free booze. Look up the possible aircraft types you'd be on through seatguru and that will suggest which airline you should fly with.0

Regrettably none of the European carriers fly to San Diego.0 -

Not for much longer, most of the Northwest planes will be wearing Delta colours soon.0 -
I think virgin are one of the worst carriers around.. they might look good, but they are overpriced for what is a bus service in the air..
i'd rather fly with the cheapest, as all it is doing is getting me from a2b.. all the airlines seem to have the same seat pitch now, which is rather standard at 31"
a few years ago, American Airlines was good, as they had "more room in coach" and their standard pitch was 34" that was ok but the service rather meh!
Delta seem to win for me now, as they fly direct from MAN to JFK, and their prices are competitive... i can get direct for the same price or less than BA / Virgin across the pond, and don't have to fly to heathrow...
and now with free booze on board... wooohooo!

Alot of long haul flights have 32'' seat pitch. Ryan Air, Jet2 etc. however, have only 30''. I flew Lufthansa last time I went to the US and the seats were fine. I like Lufthansa. The people that work for them are usually nice and friendly too so another reason why I fly with them to the US (past few yrs). And some useful seat info here http://www.airlinequality.com/Spcl/tip_LH.htm (for lufthansa) and for other airlines and useful info https://www.airlinequality.com

with regards to LH, and KLM especially, i just feel its annoying having to fly in the wrong direction to get to the USA. I prefer to go the direction i want to end up, so from MAN i'm limited with choices..
