My BT line rental is £ 15.45 a month ??!!!

I've just got my phone bill through and noticed a line that says
"This is the cost of your calling plan (which includes line rental) at
£15.45 a month, charged in advance from 5 Jul 2009 to 4 Oct 2009
Including UK landline and 0845 / 0870 numbers within plan*"

I always thought line rental was around £ 11.50 a month.

The only calling plan I have is Unlimited evenings and weekends which should be free according to BT.

I pay by Direct Debit every quarter.

Line rental is £11.25 if you opt for paperfree billing, if not they add £1.25 making it £12.50. If you are not on a rolling 12 month contract then the evening and weekend package adds a further £2.95 (I think) making the grand total £15.45.
If you are on a rolling contract then I believe the £2.95 is credited back to you further down the bill.
  • I've got exactly the same thing!
I see from another recent thread that a third person has the same problem (sorry, can't link as I'm a new poster). It also mentions that BT have changed their billing system so I think this may be something that's affected a lot of people.
I raised a complaint with them for the last bill and they admitted it was an error and refunded the amount, but they've overcharged again this month!

Having looked at my bill history I'm even more confused. The rental amount and discount have been varying every month this year.

    Anyone else having similar problems?

    Hi spiritus,

notbritishgas is spot on. If you are on the free Evening and Weekend Plan you'll see a credit in a different section of the bill. I can double-check your account to see what you're on to be sure, let me know.

Adaminspace, if you like I'll check the bill to make sure everything's as it should be.

Just had to check my mother's BT for her, apparently BT say they sent a letter in Jan-Feb about the new way of taking your money (billing).

You still can save another £1 a month on your line rental, but BT being BT like to make things crafty and almost impossible to find (Can you tell I used to work for them!). The details are online in the T&C's but you have to call them to get the deal!!!!

Have a look here under the T&C's on the BT website:

    A quick (c&p) example,
Unlimited Evening & Weekend calls at no extra cost and Line Rental with £1 off – 12 month Renewable Special Offer

This special offer isn't available through our main website. Please call us to order.
This special offer is available to eligible new and existing residential customers agreeing to a 12 month renewable contract on the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan between 16th March 2009 and 15th August 2009 (inclusive).
You will only pay line rental at £10.25 per month (£1 discount compared to standard line rental), if paying by Direct Debit or monthly payment plan and the customer elects for paper-free billing. Otherwise add £1.50 per month for payment processing fee levied by BT Payment Services Limited, a BT Group company, plus £1.25 without paper-free billing discount. Exclusions and conditions apply. Discount is via bill credit.
At the end of each 12 month minimum period the contract will be automatically renewed for a further 12 month minimum period unless you tell us otherwise before the renewal date. We will write to you the month before the renewal date to remind you of this. You cannot downgrade during the minimum period or any renewable minimum period. If you decide to end the contract within the 12 month minimum period, you will incur a single charge of £7.50 for each month left of the minimum period.
If you do not wish to renew, all you need to do is let us know before the renewal date. If you choose not to renew your contract with us, you will then start to pay the standard monthly price for the Unlimited Evening and Weekend Plan, currently £14.20 per month including line rental if you pay by Direct Debit or monthly payment plan and opt for paper-free billing.
Excludes customers benefiting from some special offers or deals.

Good luck with getting though and making yourself understood

I am on this contract - renewable every 12 months and pay £15.45 a month without paperless billing - I cannot see anywhere on my bill that I am getting any of this amount credited further down the bill  Am I being overcharged?

    best wishes
    Nan

    Hi nan64,

Just to clarify if you are on the renewable contract then a £2.95 per month credit should appear on your bill in the credits & refunds section. If your contract has just been renewed then the credit may not be on the current bill but be carried forward to the next bill where you would get the credit in arrears in addition to the credit for your calling plan in advance. I am happy to check this for you. PM your account details and I will take a look

    Many Thanks

  • All BT rolling 12 month contracts seem to have very confusing bills. BT normally states that by taking out one of these contracts you will save a certain amount per month, which will be applied as a credit to your bill. However, after taking one of these contracts you often find that several months of credit have been applied to one month’s bill. This of course means that towards the end of these rolling 12 contracts, all credit has been applied in previous months and your bill will be for the full amount.
Why BT is not able to apply one month’s credit to each monthly bill on a rolling contract is beyond belief. This obviously results in much confusion.

We were overcharged for line rental on our latest bill & I would love an explanation from one of the BT people about it (& would suggest that you all check your latest bills for this too!)

They have tweaked the dates this time so that instead of calendar months, the rental billing period matches the billing date. Our previous bill was for 1st April-30th June; billing date is 27th so they have added 1st-26th July as an extra period & the rest of the quarter is 27th July-26th October. So far so good.

We are on the 12-month free unlimited evening & weekend call package so our standard monthly charge is £15.45 with a credit of £2.95, as previously mentioned.

The next quarter 27th July-26th Oct was charged accordingly. However - and I do hope this is merely an inexplicable error - the period 1st-26th July was charged at £13.39 & no credit for the free calls.

According to my calculations, 26 days at £15.45 a month should be £12.95, and 26 days credit at £2.95 a month should be £2.47, making a total charge to us of £10.48, so BT have gained a sneaky £2.91 on our bill - & I'm wondering if many other bills are like ours, & how much BT will make out of this error altogether if it isn't picked up by them & corrected. (I'd like to know how they arrived at the figure of £13.39 too as it doesn't seem to relate to anything)

I have already rung BT & arranged for the £2.91 to be credited to our next bill but I would really like to hear how this has happened...
