My near 3 year old son's first ebay purchase!!!!

I have to share this!
The other day I sat down to check 'my ebay' and saw that I had won an item. I became curious as I hadn't bid on anything. I looked to see what it was and saw that it was a volkswagen keyring, buy it now 1.79!!!! I knew it was my little boy as he usually sits on the computer playing games on the cbeebies website whilst im cooking or something (always within my sight). He also knows how to scroll down to ebay.co.uk on the address toolbar to look at car auctions! I presume it was him as only he and I were home. My husband had just left after looking at 'keys' on ebay, and im always signed in. My son must have clicked on the auction and pressed teh buy it now button! I was so shocked and hugely glad that it was only 2.54 in total! Nonetheless I emailed the seller explaining the situation hoping he would cancel the transaction. He wasn't happy - sent me a reply about ebay fees blah blah, could let me have it for 1.29 blah blah blah. So I replied fine, i'd buy it and keep it for my son to give to him when he was older (all said in a happy sincere manner). I then sent him a request for correct amount - I knew I could have altered the postage bit but thought, no, let him send the right one in case he has a fit!! Anyway this is the reply he sent me:
> thankyou for your email. i cannot adjust the total to below the sale price on the invoice as i am sure you probably know seeing as you have a rating of over 1200. it will not let me reduce the total (including p&p) to below the buy it now price. I am sure that with a rating of over 1200 you can make a manual payment for the item - i have a rating of 86 and i know how to do it. i have sent you an email of how to pay by nochex, paypal, cheque, cash and any other method. If these are unacceptable now, please let me know and i will claim my refund and leave appropriate unretractable feedback and call it a day on this transaction. I didnt realise you were being sarcastic on your last email, but if that is the case i will swap appropriate feedback. for a 3 year old to be able to sign in a screen name, password, amount and confirm the bid - he/she must be very clever, and for a person with over 1200 rating to leave their computer signed in and then the 3 year old to type ebay.co.uk and sign in - i suggest he gets a job with nasa. I see from your feedback you have no negative ratings - i dont want to be the first. I sent you a straight email as requested by you for a total of £1.29. much less than what you bid. If you are not prepared to pay this by the end of the week i will negative rate and will not send any further correspondance. You may have a 1200+ rating, but ive been doing this a lot longer than you and will not tollerate this.

May I borrow him to program my DVD player?'Everyone loves to read but it can be a real nuisance when you lose your place. Here's a solution. When you finish reading a page, just tear it out. You'll save money on bookmarks too!' -- Amanda's Handy Hints, Amanda Keller. :cool:0

I'm with the seller on this one. Plus, what happens next time when your son *does* bid on a car?DFW Nerd 0350

Good job it was only for something small - no harm done

Mind you, if I'd been selling an £800 laptop and that had happened I'd be keen to at least recover my listing fees. Can I help?0 -
I'm sorry but why leave yourself signed in knowing that he looks on ebay?Accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.0

To do a buy it now, he also has to click on the "commit to buy" button on the next page, I think I would be sceptical and think it was an excuse to renege on a bid. But then, maybe that is just cynical ole me....

TBH, as it was for something so inexpensive I would have just paid up and put it down to experience.... and not left myself signed into ebay in the future!!0 -
Although the image of this situation is quite comical, as a seller I don't think I would of been too happy about this either... even though it was a small amount. If it would of been me, I would of paid the seller the full amount and moved on."There are no pockets in a shroud..."0

though if they take you down the NPB route neg them quick be fore they neg you and you lose the chance"Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
I suggest very strongly that you do not leave your ebay screen logged in and that way your son can't make purchases and upset genuine sellers. If I had a pound for everyone who told me their baby bid, or the dog or whatever, I would be rich.
If you are an experienced ebayer than you must know you don't need to be logged in to view auctions, so why compromise your security? This was a warning for you and luckily hasn't cost you a lot. Just be thankful he didn't buy a laptop or something, after all if you were the seller would you be happy now?
