I have lots of "stuff" that I don't want/don't need/am bored of - for example, over the 20 years that we have been married, we have accumulated quite a lot of quilt cover sets - nothing wrong with any of them except they are all dated in design, or were never to my taste in the first place, but too good to get rid of, or that I am just bored with the same stuff.......so the majority of them stay in the airing cupboard, or in the storage boxes under my bed, and I end up using the same two or three sets over and over (which I am also getting bored with).

So, if I get rid of the excess, it will clear space in my airing cupboard, will clear space in the boxes under my bed, and will give me a reason to ask for John Lewis vouchers for Christmas so I can go and choose a new set or two of bedding that I otherwise cannot afford or justify!

Similarly, some of the bed sheets - they are old, and have seen better days, but I keep saying I won't buy new until I have got rid of the old......yet I never get rid of the old

Oh I *really* know what you mean about the stuff thats too good to throw away. I have some floor length M&S curtains, that I bought over 25 years ago - blue and white stripes, and a little floral pattern on top of that. Very early 1980s.... they were up for about 5 years. Then when I came to this house, I dyed them deep green, so the now-terrible pattern didn't show, they're very dark and oppressive. They've been in the airing cupboard for about 6 years now. Do I put them to the charity shop and be done with it, or keep on, and hope that I can at least line something with them?

Hypno, you're the domestic goddess of chucking things out now, what do you think? :)

Give them to the charity shop.....

I was talking to my friend about this yesterday - she did a fab life laundry last year, following finalisation of her divorce, and the difference it has made to her in terms of energy is amazing.

I haven't seen her in about 6 weeks, but she just looks so well - everything has had a knock on effect - the clear out, the reorganistion of her timetable etc - all leading to less stress, so she was then able to give up smoking, leading to better skin tone, blah blah blah.....

......so it is as much about creating energy and space and order, as it is "oh but it might be useful one day" or "I really should do a car boot sale".....

You're right, you're right .... the way I felt last week, having done about 10% of the garage, was just great. And I did a little bit of the 2nd bedroom cupboards yesterday, and that felt good too, like I was reclaiming the house. You're on - you know, I've owned them for what, 28 years, and used them for about six .... and they're ***big*** - thats a lot of space to take up, especially if I'm moving.

    Thanks! :kisses3:

    1st 11 things done :D

I got rid of double bed sheets and king size bed sheets (we have one of those electric beds which is actually two independent matresses so neither double or king size beds are of any use!

My airing cupboard will thank me :D

    Running total then:

    11/100

Another 20 things gone......I am doing the cupboard under the sink in the utility  Various adapters for things unknown......hoover bags for hoovers we no longer own  something in a washingup liquid bottle that is not washing up liquid but no-one thought to write on the bottle what it is.....so therefore no one dares use it for anything :o and so on and so forth.....

Also, one odd boot  and a pair of worn out shoes that the lodger left behind that I fell over on my way to said cupboard under the sink

All now in a bin bag :D

    So, running total - 31/100

You are SO right about this. Plus, people pay absolute peanuts for stuff at car boots: I did one about a year ago and had people haggliing over what was already ridiculously low prices for stuff. I ended up making beggar-all profit for the amount of time, energy and pitch fees it cost me.

Am currently in the middle of The Great Declutter and I can't wait to have more space in my room. It will feel so much better. :D

  • I am impressed with the decluttering that is going on.

I will start soon but after dealing with OS stuff this week I am not quite up to it. Thats a point if I can count his stuff I would be up to about a 1000 items - I kid you not can I count them?

We are going to sort his room out now dismantle his bunk bed at 6'3" it is ridiculous that he still sleeps in it and we have low ceiling so he is about 6" from the ceiling  but he liked it but has said we can dismantle it and get him a proper bed - need to sort out some dodgy plaster in there, repaint and see if his carpet is salvageable with a good clean:rolleyes:

Having sorted out OD bedroom now she has left our house is already significantly tidier but a bit quiet

  • I'm making progress - one trip to recycling while taking DS to work...only 4 out of date telephone diectories but that is some serious space...

DT - everything counts! It is all about sorting and getting the space "right" so there is nothing that doesn't count in this exercise!

pickle - when talking to my wise friend yesterday, I reckoned that I could probably make £200 from the unwanted stuff in my house and garage etc max - and the cost of a skip is, say, £100.....so by NOT doing car boots, and NOT ebaying, it will "cost" me £300.

BUT, not everything will sell at a car boot - in fact most of it has already been to at least one, and come back home again unsold, so even if I go to a car boot, I will STILL have to get a skip in!

The majority of stuff in my garage relates to Dad's house - but it is all just "stuff" - bits of crockery, old bits of computer equipment......no real value - just the emotional stuff. And even then, I have already sorted and retrieved the stuff that means something to me, so what is left really is just "stuff".

So, for a "cost" of £300, I should be able to clear out the house and the garage, and achieve a huge amount of wellbeing, emotionally and physically......

Small price to pay, I reckon (before anyone reminds me that £300 is 6 squares I could colour in!).

DC - I am amazed we still have telephone directories in this day and age - surely we all have the phone numbers of those we want to speak to regularly programmed in our mobiles......and we can google anyone else! Definitely need to go!

I've actually lost count of how many items I have thrown :o I am getting a bit carried away - if it is in my way, it has to go :rotfl:
