Thanks Edinburgher, but over here accounts seem to cost you to open, so I thought of keeping the cash at home IYSWIM
In that case I'd just go for good old fashioned manilla envelopes in a discrete cupboard/filing cabinet somewhere0 -

For real real real emergency savings, we opened an ISA each with legal & general (plus £110 cashback via quidco
) and we pay £50 a month each into it. There is probably about £1000 there.....it is our "oh s**t, I've lost my job" money, so is not to be spent on debt repayments, skiing, or anything else. Up until we started doing this, we had absolutely no provision for any emergency at all, and that started to bother me somewhat.
The aim is to get enough put away so that we have 3 months worth of basic mortgage/bills covered should one of us lose their main job. At the moment, the level of savings we have will cover us for about 10 daysSuccessful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. Well it all helps Hypno, even if you only have 10 days worth so far.
I am sorry but I am copying off you again. I have just opened one saving pot at halifax. I am going to open a couple more but I have to wait for my registeration to go through online, as I have not got a normal current account for them, so I have to wait for them to send me a password.
I agree with you, I think it is a really good idea that you can name the accounts what you want.DFW#972 LBM2 (09/07/12) £25938.84; Current £23783.35;Credit Credit Card1 £128.47/£6424.24 (2%);Credit Card2 £443.86/£15663.25 (2.8%); Overdraft £0/£2500 (0%)0 -
Copy away! I don't mind - the truth is that my own ideas are only those I have nicked off other people somewhere on this site!!
I bought a new "money" diary today - my old academic diary has come to an end, so a new shiny one is now in my bag ready for me to add figures in.
And Egg have found the missing money - so the account officially shows at £394 now:T When that is cleared next month, it will mean that there is an extra £194 to play with each month which will certainly help while income is low.Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. DD got into Nottingham Trent and ended up with 60 more points than she needed!!!!
She got A in Art (only dropped 4 marks), A in Maths and C in psychology (being checked as everybody had course work dropped 2 grades), so we are reallyproud of her.
Steer clear of Colchester tonight as the A2 students are out in force !!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -

Thanks for the tip hypno. I think I will keep them in envelopes clearly marked and discreetly located;) I know if I pay off the cc then something will definitely crop up. Also it seems crazy not to have an emergency fund , I think the reason we are in debt is that things that crop up tend to be put on the cc in the first place IYKWIM because we had NO CONTIGIENCY PLAN. Must sort out my envelopes now then.:TVisa £[STRIKE]5063 [/STRIKE]now 0. Loan 1 €[STRIKE]4885[/STRIKE] now 0. Loan 2 €29,590 now €0 as of 22/02/2016 Mgage €55000/ €23,639 at 01/02/18

Hypno....could you tell me how to name my savings accounts on Halif*x please. I've just opened a reward account, 5 savings accounts and moved my isa (not much money in either of them, but I can dream), have set them up online but can't see how to call them what I want to call them. grrr.0
