hey all.
recently got a new water bill.
Bill went up from 31 to 47 a month with 41 surcharge to be paid.
It's a 2 bedroom flat with 1 adult and 1 child there. Use water for washing up/ drinking/ cooking and shower and small bath for the kid.
Now how on earth can the bill go up so rapidly? Rechecked meter to give them another reading and they're quoting £600 a year bill. Water isn't used on the garden and showers are only 5-10min max.
Its a rented property and suspect there may be a leak so will endevour to find out, but what can be done about this? I'm going to keep regular checks on the meter etc. to see whats what, but I can't work out why the bill is so high?
cheers.0 -
Hi
My water bill was payable for 2 instalments one in 1/4/09 and the second one on 01/10/09.
for the first instalment I wasnt able to pay and they took me to court 2 weeks ago and added their court costs.
When I replied to court I said I part admit this claim as there is 3 months to october and paid promptly the first instalment(borrowed money from a friend).
I received a letter saying that I lost my right to pay by instalment and addition to this payment I have to pay for rest of the year plus court costs and this will be on ccj on my name even though I pay it full now.
Surely they dont have a right to take me court for unused water.
Any advice please

Hi All,
I have just recieved my water bill from Bristol water / Wessex Water and they are wanting me to pay £257 for 6 months supply of water and sweage. This seems very high for a two bedroom flat with one person in it. I use the washing machine once or twice a weeks on short washes and usually use the gym for showers (no baths) and a bit of water for plate washing teeth etc. I live in a first floor flat (in a block of three). When I looked at the water meter (each flat has an individual meter), even though I had everything switched off it was still turning very slowly. If I turn the stop !!!! by the meter the meter does stop. Does this mean that I have a leak somewhere or could it still be a faluty meter (no one has reported any leaks and I do not know where the pipes flow anyhow). I pay a serivce charge that covers communal buildings insurance.
Am I liable for the water pipes that might flow through a communal part of the flat building as they supply me directly or are the property management company and if there is a leak is there an easy way to find out where it is without taring the walls down. I am just worried about a huge plumbing bill that I can ill afford.
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give

If you have turned off the stop !! and the meter stops turning then, then it's not a meter fault. Are you sure when you did the test that everything was off (including washing machines, dishwashers)?Indecision is the key to flexibility0 -
So my family has had our water turned off for almost a week now. We've been buying gallons at King Soopers for real cheap so we can flush the toilet. Will the water we use add to our bill?
thanks!0 -
I want to share simple tip :beer:on how we can save on our water bills. Be sure the your water meter is fit and that no excess water is overflowing. This may cause an additional amount on your bill. I hope this helps you reduce a little bit from your water bill.0

I had cause to phone up the National Debtline a month or so ago and during my conversation they asked me if I had any other debts to which I mentioned my water bill. They told me about the charity trust set up by each utility company to help out in times of hardship and need.
I have acquired a form for Thames Water Trust and will be posting off today. Will update on the result as it comes in but thought it might be useful info for any others out there.
As dumb as it sounds, I wasn't aware that I had to pay for water when I first moved into my home and by the times the first bill showed up THREE years later I owed quite a large sum.DEBT FREE AND LOVING LIFE0 -
I wonder if anyone could offer me some advice as I am in a bit of a dilemma. We were talking in work the other day about water meters and charges and my colleagues mentioned how much their bills were, which were way, way more than mine so it got me thinking. When I checked my last two water bills it said we had used 0 cubic metres one 6 month period and 1 cubic metre the next. The meter is outside in the pavement and the bills suggested the readings had been taken by the Water Company - in fact I don't recall ever doing a reading myself. I'm worried now that something must be wrong with the meter and that the Water company will either hold me liable for back charges or even worse, accuse me of tampering with the meter - which I haven't and wouldn't even know how to.
What should I do for the best? I am due another bill around the end of this month so could wait and see what that one is, but I don't want to end up having to pay thousands of pounds in back payments. I haven't got the money for a start.
I suppose I could be accused of being a bit naive but as they had read the meter I just assumed they were accurate so never gave it a second thought as it is paid by direct debit.
We live in a 3 bedroom house (2 adults, 1 6 year old) with normal stuff, washing machine, shower, etc).
