At the end of the day, they charge to do nothing more than process something that evaporates from the oceans, and falls from the sky...it's not as much of an industrial process as processing and distributing, say, oil and gas for example!

Yeah thats all they do
  • Hi, I have never really looked at our bills as the other half has delt with them in out rented house. It seems we may be getting well and truly stiched though.

We were paying £50 per month (over the odds by the sounds of things) and have just had a letter moving it to £75 per month. It is a 2 bedroom house with 2 of us living there, no kids etc.

Looking at other posts and doing a caculator on uswitch seems that we may have been paying about £500 per year more than needed.

    Does this sound right?

If we have been paying way over, is there any way of getting any money back?

First rented house with bills separately so would appreciate any advice. We are on the Isle of Wight and Southern Water.

    Thanks

How do you mean paying over ?

if you are on rateable value its a fixed amount, if you are on a meter you pay for what you use
  • sorry, we are not on a meter - so i assume we may have been paying over what we actually use as we pay by direct debit...

If you are not on a meter then you are on a fixed rate per year so they divide that amount by 12 and thats what you pay,
  • You don't expect your gas/electricity to be determinined by the size of your property;)

Utter codswallop! Some energy suppliers DO charge by the property you live in. Resulting in people with a 1 bedroom flat paying what someone in a THREE bedroomed house pays. Rip Brtiain here we come! I know, because I've experienced it from a few. Don't imagine I am alone, either. Good cut and paste job BTW with the rest of your knowledge. Straight out of a utility companies leaflets by the looks of it.
Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.
  • Hi, just wondering if some one could help me,

I rent a unit on an industrial estate and i have just recieved my suface water and highway drainage charge from united utilities. My monthly water bill is £4.13 which is good, we hardly use it but you have to pay something!! Our bill is £1000.12 for the year!!!!!!!!! soooooo unfair!!!! I have checked with our rates office and as it turns out the water board has us in the wrong band. If anyone who is non-household have this same problem , dont let them get away with it, do you research!!!!

I pay £430 a year for a 2 bedroomed flat because the rateable value is based on the enormous house that was here before the block was built, It is daylight robbery.
  • We moved into our house last april and have been paying 16.81 a month for water. Just recieved my new bill and its now £37 a month which is more than doubled. Severn Trent tell me this is because they forgot to put on the water used part of the bill last year and therfore have added it on this year. Is this fair?

They tell me I have to pay, I can pay over a longer period etc. They aslo tell me that this has happened with 'a number' of customers. Would love to know how many other people have had a shock like me and if anyone has any advice on what to do about it.

    thanks

I moved in to rented accomodation back in december, and only just noticed that we have been paying £61 a month since then in water bills by DD. I only live in a (very very small) 2 bed flat, 2 sharing, 1 bathroom. I had a letter yesterday informing me that my future DD's would be £46 a month.I'm with Welsh Water, does this sound a little high?! And why have I been paying so much for the past 3 months?!

I will give them a ring, I was just wondering if anyone had any idea of the usual rate for a small 2 bed flat. The house is council tax band D if that's any help. No water meter, just standard rate.

    Thanks
