On the average canal towpath (where i've seen so much Rambler-Rage recently) with two people walking next to each other, there isn't anyway to get past unless they let you through.

I'm not sure they'd appriciate some of the earlier suggestions of piledriver type techniques :rotfl:

Buy an Airzound (air horn for a bike). It makes ramblers so angry it takes them a while to think of something rude enough to say, by which time you're well past them!

It also works wonders on errant car drivers who cut you up too :).

Just seen Airzound in action on youtube, and have been inspired to buy one, cant wait to try it out on the blue packamac brigade.

You want to really hack them off? Get a trials bike, they really, really, really hate them, especially in the wet
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

On a slightly more serious note, you should meet the fishermen round here if you don't like ramblers. Last cyclist that tried this technique got chased down the towpath, by van, caught, beaten up, and him and his bike thrown into the canal.

Midlands, don't mess with the fishermen, well upset when the canals were cleaned up, and canal boats allowed to use them, let alone cyclists. (if your rod isn't across the towpath, into the hedge, and possibly onto the road on the other side, not worth having)
