How can you give way to somebody travelling slower than you in the same direction?

Good question, however that was on the link from the OP.

Ramblers hate everything not on two legs. Cyclists, horses, prams, vehicles. When they come across something, they either mill about like sheep and can't decide which side of the path they should be on or they adopt the militant 'we are not going to move, you will have to go through the hedge / over the wall / fly out of our way' approach. And if you dare to make eye contact and say anything as controversial as 'good morning' you'll be scowled at like you just threatened to eat one of them.

To me they have a similar atitude as the land owners who 'they' fought for the right to roam, "we're ok being here but everyone else can stay off"

i agree - ramblers hate everything with a passion. they want byways closed to anything but themselves and then had the cheek to push through the right to roam bill meaning that they could go tramping all over peoples gardens to boot. they complain about the damage vehicles cause to lanes when in fact councils have to spend hundreds of thousands repairing badly eroded footpaths in popular areas, whilst responsible vehicle greenlaners often cut back overgrowing vegetation, clear rubbish and flytipping, and repair the surface of the lane all off their own backs to ensure the lane remains useable for everyone.
plus their stupid flourescent cagoules are an eyesore on the environment

When we're out walking I just wish cyclists would ring their bells if approaching from behind, we've had several near misses when cyclists have approached from behind at speed and swept past and we've nearly stepped in their path. I think they made bells compulsory for this reason but most don't seem to use them.
A problem shared is a problem multiplied. :o
  • Bells are great until you encounter people wearing a walkman (or the modern equivalent).

As a cyclist I love the pedestrians who think that they're being clever by not stepping to the side. I don't expect not to have to move over myself when there's room for it, but the pedestrians who think that 17 stones of rider and 35lb of mountain bike won't be painful upon impact with their body really are at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder.

Just take one out at full speed, prop the body up against the nearest style as a warning to other ramblers.

Same principle as the gamekeeper nailing birds and weasels to the fence.

Buy an Airzound (air horn for a bike). It makes ramblers so angry it takes them a while to think of something rude enough to say, by which time you're well past them!

It also works wonders on errant car drivers who cut you up too :).
