With regards to this dont be supprised if its sent back unrepaired and/or you get charged. The console isnt faulty, when they receive it (if they can check it), it will become apparent that your console hasnt recieved the 'ring of death'. Your Xbox isnt faulty its merely over heating, something that extremely common and has been happening since the original xbox's have hit UK stores. Leave it for a day or two and it will be fine, just use it in a well vented room or do the fan trick....
Think there's something more fundamental at play. It's not a "normal behaviour" for a console to overheat during normal use at the best of times, but in my old place I often left the 360 on overnight in an extremely hot bedroom.
Now, in a cool lounge it overheats in 20 minutes.
This is not a problem the thing's always had, it's definitely developed a fault. (probably due to being left on overnight in a hot room

This may be the case, but the op and you should contact Microsoft direct and ask them about the problem. Not 'fake' the red ring and hope that they can diagnose it when it reaches there warehouse. Sadly Donna is going about this the wrong way, for all we know those consoles set to be repaired with 2 lights can be sent somewhere in the UK whereas (if I can remember) the red ring consoles are sent to somewhere in Germany. I dont know if Donna will be charged whereas you arnt (within 3 years) for the red ring problem, the only people that can give a proper answer is Microsoft.0 -
It's likely that Microsoft will fix the problem with no charge, even though it doesn't have the 3 lights problem.
When we phoned M$ last year about the E74 error (1 red light), which is a manufacturing problem, they said it wasn't a fault (even though it is almost as common as 3 RLD) and it would cost us money to fix. My DS1 thought he'd chance it, ticked the 3RLD box and sent his xbox off the Germany and about 2 weeks later it was returned fixed. Low and behold! in April this year M$ decided that E74 WAS a manufacturing fault and is now covered by warranty http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969905 . (But they don't make this well known do they?)
It's only a matter of time til M$ cover all the faults inherent in the xbox 360 in their warranty, it's a shoddy piece of workmanship!
It's only a game

my son had the redring of death and phoned microsoft and they sent a pepaid bag so he could sent tit back to them and it went and was back in a week all mended and hes was about 15moths old
cozza
when i phoned them they suggested doing it online because it would be quicker. i spent over £6 today at the post office buying a box, bubble wrap and clear cellotape. on the ups website i requested for them to pick it up tomorrow. i could have requested today which makes me suspitious. i am wondering if they definitely will come tomorrow.
for all the grief they cause i think they should just send you a voucher to get a brand new console plus a voucher for a free game. that would not mean them losing that much money in my case because i paid £250 for mine and they are alot cheaper than that now. it would also mean i would be more likely to keep buying games. as things are i dont plan to ever buy another 360 game.0 -
How about something like this ~
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XBOX-360-COOLER-FAN-COOLING-KIT-FOR-LONGER-COOL-GAMING_W0QQitemZ330341130257QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN?hash=item4ce9dda011&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1683|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50
Cant say it will cure it, but anything that cools the 360 down is surely going to help
Seems interesting that having slagged off the PS3 that you end up telling us that your now NEVER going to buy anymore 360 games. The PS3 wasnt so bad after all then...........
i think the heat sink system within the console is what has gone kerput. just before the lights come on and when the cooling system speeds up the air coming out at the top of the back panel is particularly hot and the base of the console isnt even warm. in normal circumstances the base would be very warm.
have i slagged the ps3 off? well it does have weaknesses. this experience does make me favour it. if i didnt have most of my games for the 360 including exclusives like halo3, gears of war 1 and 2 i am not sure i would be bothering to get it fixed.0 -

They is nothing wrong with the unit it is just over heating. Once summer is over the 2 red lights dissappear and its fine.
However with the same machine he has had 'the ring of death'. In this case Microsoft sent him an empty box through UPS courrier's. He then put just the unit in the box and then phoned for collection. UPS collected it a few days later and it was fixed within 2 weeks and then returned UPS (free of charge).

when it first happened i had only been playing for 10 minutes. i left it for a day and it happened within a minute of turning the console on. the idea of using a fan did occur to me and i did that but it made no difference.
if they do a thorough test they will see that no amount of time left unused will make any difference. you mentioned an older console. mine is only 18 months old.0 -
Something seriously amiss if a physical 'heat sink' has moved in such a way it no longer removes heat!:idea:0

there was a box to explain what happened and i did tell the truth.0 -

An actual heat sink works by physically 'touching' whatever its supposed to be drawing heat away from. So its either physically moved (ie ~ been dropped or whatever)
Or its got that hot that the joints have melted/moved (I find that unlikely, but so many 360s have the same problem its a possible design fault):idea:0
