well as it was bought december 2007 it is roughly 18 months old and therefore 6 months over the usual 12 month warranty. i just thought i could remember people in the past talking about how certain stores were very good and would replace the console rather than make you go through the process of sending it off. what about mentioning the sale of goods act?
what makes me particularly annoyed is i still have old consoles like the megadrive that are still working.

Not sure on this but. I dont think the sales good act would come into it as there is only 12 months warrenty on it after that its down to the manafacture to decide on what they want to do with it . AS you might of heard. Microsoft launched repair programme last year. You are better off following there instructions ( if you cannot get any other help to get it working) and then if their help fails then just get in contact with them and tell them. tbh your better of with sending it of (if they want you to) because they (were) including a extra 1 years warrenty with all repair jobs.

Electronics these days are built not only for the performance , but for style so when it comes to a case and fittings they have all this "high performance" hardware yet they fit it in stupid tiny cases and use as less parts as they can. Where as consoles back in the day where designed to last in there bulky black cases lol

Does the picture on Microsofts Support Website the same as yours?

i got a ps3 a couple of months ago. i guess i will be buying all my games for that now if the problem proves to be as serious as it seems. i certainly wont buy any more 360 games even if it gets fixed.
yes the picture matches. i was sure the page i saw mentioned something about checking the light on the power pack as well. i didnt do that earlier. i had noticed that the power pack was feeling hotter that usual lately so hopefully it wont be any more serious than the power pack.

    From MicroSoft website:

Cause: The Xbox console is overheated.

Let your Xbox 360 console cool. You may have to wait several hours for your console to cool enough. Don't turn on your Xbox 360 console when the console is hot.
Verify that your Xbox 360 console has enough ventilation and that the fans are operating. For more information about ventilation, see the "More Information" section.
If the two lights continue to flash red after you try steps 1 and 2, contact Xbox Customer Support.

To try to prevent this problem, follow these precautions:Don't block any ventilation openings on your Xbox 360 console.
Don't put your Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, on a carpet floor, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
Don't put your Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well ventilated.
Don't put your Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.

i am going through the process of sending the console for repair. i am have some questions about it.
1.do i have to attach the electronic returrn label to the package myself? i am sure i read yesterday that the person picking it up would attach the label.
    2. i read yesterday that i should write on the box my name and address for returning to me but my name and address is on the electronic returns label, so why write it myself?

    Hi All,

I'm also suffering two red lights at the mo - is this fault actually covered by 3 year warranty? I thought that was only for 3 red lights?

ETA: very similar circumstances to OP. 2 red lights come on after about 20 minutes of play. I'd just moved the xbox for the first time to a new media unit - it's not *as well* ventilated as the old one, but it's still something like 50wx20hx50d(cm) - so it's not crammed in with anything, piled up etc...but it is in an enclosed space - old unit had open sides.

in my case the console has never been in an enclosed space at all. is the two red lights covered? to be honest i dont know. it certainly should be because there isnt really much difference. the problem is caused by the same design fault and in both cases it means no more gaming until its fixed. when i registered for repair on the site it asked if it was a 3 red lights problem when i said no it wanted credit card details. so i just said yes. i am hoping they will still repair it. the console is only 18 months old so its a disgrace if they send it back unrepaired.
all this hassle is annoying. i wish i was rich. i would just say stuff it and go out and buy a new console.

How about something like this ~
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XBOX-360-COOLER-FAN-COOLING-KIT-FOR-LONGER-COOL-GAMING_W0QQitemZ330341130257QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN?hash=item4ce9dda011&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1683|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Cant say it will cure it, but anything that cools the 360 down is surely going to help

Seems interesting that having slagged off the PS3 that you end up telling us that your now NEVER going to buy anymore 360 games. The PS3 wasnt so bad after all then...........

  • My lil bro always gets 2 red light in summer on his oldest machine (he has three dont ask ). He just sticks an electric fan directed on it and it works fine. They is nothing wrong with the unit it is just over heating. Once summer is over the 2 red lights dissappear and its fine.

However with the same machine he has had 'the ring of death'. In this case Microsoft sent him an empty box through UPS courrier's. He then put just the unit in the box and then phoned for collection. UPS collected it a few days later and it was fixed within 2 weeks and then returned UPS (free of charge).
when i registered for repair on the site it asked if it was a 3 red lights problem when i said no it wanted credit card details. so i just said yes. i am hoping they will still repair it. the console is only 18 months old so its a disgrace if they send it back unrepaired.

With regards to this dont be supprised if its sent back unrepaired and/or you get charged. The console isnt faulty, when they receive it (if they can check it), it will become apparent that your console hasnt recieved the 'ring of death'. Your Xbox isnt faulty its merely over heating, something that extremely common and has been happening since the original xbox's have hit UK stores. Leave it for a day or two and it will be fine, just use it in a well vented room or do the fan trick....
