It's a choice though, and if you can't afford to do something then you don't. You wouldn't choose to go on holiday when you couldn't afford it. There's help out there but the funds that Universities have are always taken up by the people who didn't think about the financial sustainability of their study. Anyway the Access to Learning Fund is going to be much more limited in future years as the Government cut funding, so people who don't think won't be bailed out; and quite right too.

Additionally i believe the course you mention gets the standard undergrad funding plus the TT Bursary.

So on your reasoning no one should have access to the ALF?

Your comments towards elisebutt65 are uncalled for. MSE is about helping each other out, not passing judgment on someone of whom you know nothing about.

Ok, i'm sorry if i went a bit too far, but i do stand my my point. If people are careful with there finances, research what they will get but for some reason something effects there finances (an unforeseen change of circumstances), then of course they deserve help. That is what the ATLF is there fore and that is when it should be used. However is someone comes into HE with unrealistic expectations, or knowing that they will be short, in my opinion thats when the money is wasted.

The course in question is very well funded, and apart from the bleeding heart bt, i stand by everything they say. Besides which, argreeing with someone or telling them what they want to hear doesn't always help.

There is no if about it, if you reread what you said to elisebutt65 it was plain rude. It was not a case of agreeing or disagreeing with her, it is about having basic manners.

Hopefully when you need help people won't be so unkind to you.

What can this cover? This year has been a bit of a struggle financially but I've now come to realise next year will be impossible.
I have to do a semester (so half the year) full-time work placement, and I can't afford to live on just my student loan because they assess me as needed less as I live at home and work part-time. Just trying to think ahead if this fund could help me next year as I'll apply in October (if that's allowed).

  • I do agree to some extent with Grimupnorth's comments- although are more incentives and encouragement to encourage people into higher education, it is a choice- and people do need to think about whether they will have the finaces and be preparede to be on a lower income whilest they are studying.
If you go on to do a post-grad, presumably you'll be more aware about the financial constraints you will have to put up with, knowing that eventually you will have a good qualification.
Perhaps people are not prepared to make changes to there life styles any more- from what I understand of the fund, it is quite limited and there for real emergencies (evction for example) and where there is a considerable shortfall.
(Possibly referring to 'starving kiddies' didn't help elsiebutts case)

The form will ask about dependents, and will allow for a certain amount for each of them. This amount is set by the government x

You can apply at any time of the year, although they may choose to defer payment until later in the year. If you have excessive costs in one area, such as travel, you can put a note to this effect on your application x

I was talking to the ALF adviser for my next Uni and apparently if you have children, then your incomings can be up to 15,000 and then they have set amounts for the other expenses. If you are spending excessively, then they may call you in to justify these amounts. You usually have to circle all expenditure on your bank statements over £100 and put a note explaining this.

I have been applying to charities for next year as there is no funding whatsoever for a taught Masters and the ALF only applies in dire explainable emergencies. She still advised me to put in a claim as soon as I started in September just so they have the paperwork to hand and they can just put it on hold. However, X-fingers, next year I should be ok as I have sat down and worked out a budget, to get me through the year. I have a lecturing job ready and waiting as soon as I have got my Masters so then I can start to pay off my £30+ G's of student debt hahahahahahahmanic laughter hahahahahaha!!:rotfl::rotfl:
