For a moment I was considering transferring my ISAs and everythjing to my parents and becoming poor just to get that, then I remembered I have a heart. sigh
If I had words to make a day for you,
I'd sing you a morning golden and new.
I would make this day last for all time,

Who knows? I think I'll only have enough money to pay 1st year then scarily enough I won't have any more. Vacation jobs and pt work will probably more proactive.

  • Will this be available to my partner? She is returning to HE in September, but because she's already achieved an honours degree (10years ago) she's not eligible for a loan. The only financial assistance we 'might' get is the maintenance grant.....

We have 3 kids and the childcare costs (£600/month) will cripple us.

Yes always declare everything so they get an overview of your financial position, but be aware that the money cannot be used to clear credit cards or other non-secured debt. Basically you need to be careful how you phrase things on the application i.e. you would need to ask for help towards your rent, general living costs - not to pay your credit card statement!

If you have reasons also why your rent is so expensive (limited accomodation options etc) say why. However, they do have a ceiling to the maximum amount of support they can give per week/month in rent so bare that in mind.

Overall on the basis of what you have said, you have potential to be awarded. Just remember to be wholly honest with them (to decieve them would be classed as fraud and could lead to a criminal prosecution) not that I'm implying that you wouldn't be! Also watch your wording and ensure you use plently of emotive language in your statement!

    Good Luck!

In short - yes sounds promising. She can only apply once a student though so the funding cannot be guarenteed prior to starting. However do apply on day one of the new academic year. Who has told you that she is ineligible for the student loan?

Hi Torby - I did a doctorate before going back to do another undergraduate, and funding arrangements are totally different for postgrad study. There is no government help or loans as such, although you can apply to the Access funds in cases of hardship.

What subject is she studying? Sometimes the research councils will fund post-grad study....

  • Hi,

I just wanted to know if P/T student can get is aswell? I started uni in September 2006 (as couldn't afford full time) + it has been alot more expensive that I thought. I have a full time Job which pays reasonable but I have had to rely on my parents to give me handouts to pay for my mortgage. It really hard coz i've been independent for over 4 years and having to ask my parents for money is soo depressing! I might even think of getting a lodger in. I also have about £10k worth of debt, through loans, overdrafts + credit cards. I know i'm not entittled to a Student Loan, but do feel like P/Time student don't really get much support with finances.

Would be great if I can get a bot extra cash, as my council tax is due soon + don't know how im gonna pay it + still need to buy my refernce books for uni.

    Any help Would be appreciated

    Thanks
    Kate:-)

    robhammond,

The student Loans company told my wife she is not eligible for a loan as she has already completed a degree. The fact that it was 15 years ago, and she didn't take a loan (or a grant) during it is irrelevant apparently.

Unfortunately, according to the student advisers, a lot of other grants are based on the student loan. Their way of thinking is: you can have additional help if you've already used up your loan.

Conclusion: no financial help for us, despite us paying off the fees for her 1st degree many times over in income tax....

PT students can apply, but it depends on how many credits you are doing. They will take your income into account when assessing you for help.

You may qualify for Council Tax benefit - again, that depends on your income. If you try your students union advice centre, they will be able to help you with your debts and with any other funds or benefits you might be entitled to. You need to pay your council tax before any other credit debts as it is a priority debt.

Taking in a lodger short term might be a good solution - but that depends on how you feel about it? Maybe you could ask the uni housing department if they have overseas students who are looking for short term accommodation?
