    what a good thread

i am just downloading the forms now..although i doubt i will get a penny as my OH is always deemed "well off" he earns 17k, but is paying all the bills, mortgage etc from his wage and then i get £480 bursary.

i will apply and see what they say. i have £2500 in overdrafts and my other accounts are in debt too. when you say copy the bank statements what shoudl i do as we have two accounts one for OH wage and the direct debits and one for my bursary and to live off. i just find it easier to seperate the two things really, should i copy both statements??

I'd say copy them anyway and take them with you when you hand in the forms. They will then tell you if they really need them
    Thanx

If your friend's son hasn't heard anything by now I would be in touch with them and find out what is happening with it. It shouldn't ever tae that long to process the application.

"Do they have a set amount they give for the summer fund or do they just work out how much you need according to your expenditure like the access to learning"

It's just like the ATL fund it is beased on income & expenditure. The 8th July should be ok if they have said it will still be available then. Very few students are actually aware of this fund unfortunately so she proably won't have any problems! Good Luck!

    "should i copy both statements??"

Yes declare everything, you stand as good a chance as any - especially as they are ususally looking for anybody who fits the criteria as they are desperate to give it away!

The summer fund is like the general Access to Learning Fund, it depends on your income & expenditure and current financial position. I would go to your Uni's website and see if they are available on there or call the student finance office. They will explain to you who qualifies and take it from there.

If you have any questions post them on the board - there are enough of us on here with experience to help.

    Good Luck all

Hey just wanted to say, I got an email today from Access To Learning and they're giving me £1,465!!! I would never have applied if I hadn't seen this thread because I thought my income would be too high. I bring in about £18,000 a year, not including student loans or grants, but loads of that wasn't regarded. They don't count your DLA, or wages if you're a lone parent as you have an assumed income of £0.

It just goes to show, if you're in doubt still apply! You could be earning £50,000 a year, but if you have £51,000 a year going out, you're likely to get something!

    Thanks!!

    Hi,

We have just come into a fair bit of hardship (partner just diagnosed with a tumour and cant work as much) and just phoned the OU as they do offer the access to learning fund, and he said I wouldnt be able to get anything as its only for childcare, transport and learning costs such as books and internet access?

We really need this money as we are struggling to pay bills and buy food at the moment.

Based on your experience is it worth me applying?

I live with my parents, have no serious outgoings and I work 20 hours a week bringing in £500-600 a month.

My current account is -£200 and my student account is -£1400
I have just completed my second year of a 3 year degree.

    Morally, should I apply?
    Realistically, will I get anything?

    Cheers ;)
  • Realistically you have to have outgoing which rival your income. Priority is given to lone parents, mature students, third years and those with disabilities.

Money is not given to people who are skint because they've spent their entire student loan in Wetherspoons. Money can also be awarded for exceptional/emergency costs such as dentist/medical/course equipment (i.e computer breaks) or if you desperately need your car and it needs some work doing to it.

SuperBOB- I doubt you would get anything, since you're not experiencing hardship, and if you're living at home bringing in £500+ a month you shouldn't need any more money!
  • SuperBOB- your loans and grants are regarded as income. You add these up per year and divide by 39 weeks. That's your weekly income, plus your wage.

On the expenditure side you list your outgoings. As I've said, it doesn't matter if you ahve a high income (mine is around £18,000+ not including £8,000 a year in loans/grants) but I was awarded nearly £1500 because my partner left me with a derelict house and no money!
