I have just applied for the ALf and will be rewarded £663!! My friend did the same at the beginning of the year and only got £300 so I was expecting a similar amount. The only trouble is the finanace dept have run out of cheque books, would you believe it?!

In the third year of my degree costs have been spiralling out of control. £50 for the £50 for that, one thing after another. This money is well needed, and will be well received!

I applied for this because myself and my girlfriend were in a bit of difficulty (I'm a mature student and we were paying the mortgage on her wage) but because I work one day a week they said I couldnt have anything. So I now have three credit cards and two overdrafts as well as my student loan. Access to Learning fund my !!!!!!.

I agree with the other poster who said people who didnt need it had applied and got money too, guess it just depends on how convincing a liar you are, I told the truth and got nothing even though I needed it.

    Rant over, thanks!

I applied after my ex boyfriend had ripped me off and apparently that wasn't deemed reasonable grounds, I ended up missing a number of lectures to work just to keep my head above water. I think it depends upon the university, because my debt free sponging off parents brother got it no problems!

  • My daughter was refused by Southampton - and after she braved the dragon in the Office and I wrote the best begging letter of my life! (What is embarrassing is that it was pretty well all true)
I am sooooooo waiting for them to invite her to contribute to their alumni association when she leaves................
  • I just wanted to thank robhammond for all his great advice on his thread! I followed your advice & recieved a check for nearly £2000! I wouldn't have even known about the fund if it wasn't for this forum so i'm very grateful!!

So much so I registered just so I could tell you that!! I'm going to nominate you for post of the month - you deserve it in my eye's!

Humph, I need a video player for my course, but haven't got one. haven't got a tv either. so obviously havent got a tv licence. Was told I couldnt have the funding cos its not part of my course. Have sent the details back with the syllabus which clearly states I need it for the course. Better luck this time I suppose!
The !!!!!! of it is I DONT WANT A TV!!!!

Of course, just because you have a TV doesn't mean you have to have a license. If you detune all the channels, and write to the TV licensing people to let them know you have it only for VCR / DVD purposes then you don't have to pay. I did this for three years whilst at Uni. We rented the odd DVD, and played video games on it and that was it. Saved £130 a year!

  • Well got the forms, just got the task of filling em in now  If my partner wasn't so thrifty with cash tho', we'd be well skint. People shouldn't be penalised for being careful moneywise. It's just the transport costs have been that costly (gonna get worse in septemeber when he will be travelling 180 miles round trip to uni and back), that we've had to scrimp and scrap. It's been worth it tho', he's doing really well!! Fingers crossed he gets some alf funding. He'll defo need it Septemeber onwards, gonna cost over £100 a week
  • By the way. My partner was given two forms, 1 pink and 1 yellow. The advisor said he needed to fill them both in. Anyone else had to do this?? 1 appears to be mainly alf for living costs, and the pink one is the alf form.
