Looking for a newer car - does this look a good buy?

Have spent most of the day looking at the scrappage scheme deals today and agree that the Ceed looks pretty good! I don't do a high mileage but we do have to lug lots of boys around and lots of rugby equipment and so forth and since we live a bit of a distance from proper shops we need a boot that can take a lot when we do go shopping.
I also rather like the Skoda Octavia now I have had a look at it.
Also quite like the Vauxhall Astra Estate, I had one of their Astra Vans for ages and it was a super reliable vehicle that cost me almost nothing to run. They seem a bit high on price though compared to the Skodas and Hyundais and so forth.
Now that I have started looking I am probably going to confuse myself with all the choices:o.
Had intended to just get an "interim" car for a while until we have either moved or extended our house or built a new one and know what spare cash I have left to buy something special but the scrappage scheme seems good enough that it is probably worth spending that bit more and getting something that will hopefully do me for a few years. wouldn't normally have considered a brand new car either as I hate the thought of the depreciation but these deals make it seem a lot more worthwhile.
Thanks for the help and advice, it gave me a starting point for looking around."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0

you could do a lot worse than buying an old land rover discovery, a 300tdi series 1 to be precise. they are dirt cheap, very plentiful so finding one or getting parts for it wont be an issue, extremely robust and go on forever. they are also a brilliant family car and will go anywhere you point them off road to boot. upwards of about 1000 quid will buy a very nice well looked after one. because they are older vehicles, the road tax is still resaonable, insurance is cheap due to the ease of repair, and they do a reasonable 30+mpg in diesel form. they are also extrememly cheapand easy to service, requiring no main dealer fancy tricks like a kia ceed for instance - you could do all but the most complicated services at home and save a fortune. by scrapping your old car yourself you could pay for a large chunk of the purchase price as well.

Not very money saving only getting 30mpg for a diesel,my Skoda Octavia averages about 62 mpg ..Whats the road tax on a disco?? mines £120 yr.I understand what you say about servicing but most people wouldn't know how to drain the oil out etc .I have mine serviced by a small independant garage who use genuine parts and it costs about £175 for a full service, but I only do about 7k a year ..0

I know what you are saying: but I have reached a point in my life where I would actually like to have a decent car (in nice condition) on the road for once and not to have to worry about it.
I'm afraid I'm not up to servicing it myself these days either or routing around at the breakers for parts:D. Been there and done that in my youth, want a tiny bit of luxury in my life now."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0

Gosh this thread has caused some havoc in my life!!!!!!!
Actually went and test drove a Kia Ceed today, and I was bowled over! It is the rather nice Ceed 1.6 CRDi SW-7 Limited Edition (and it was brand spanking and a lovely shiny black:o). Had not intended to get hooked on the top of the range car - but it is lovely and moved like .... off a shovel:D
Haven't driven anything that shiny and new in donkeys years!
Am going to look at the Skoda and the Hyundai tomorrow:D.
Now, the next big question will be how to extract the VERY best prices possible for the one I decide on because I am not very good at haggling and only got the scrappage off the list price today despite saying I would expect a good price for a cash deal. Suspect I shall chicken out because I nearly died of fright at the thought of spending £14,420.00 on something that is not bricks and mortar:D"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0

Moggy, I remember posting on a the board this time last year and I am so pleased I listened on the Audi front. For what you pay for them, you are not actually getting a lot of buck for your money. I went from desiring one to realising that I would be just as happy with a Civic Sport or a Corsa especially if I could afford a better car buck for buck.DEBT FREE AND LOVING LIFE0

A Discovery 300Tdi is most definitely not what you need.:o
It will be at least 11 years old, be riddled with rot (unless you're luucky) and loads of bits won't work.
It will also be expensive to fuel and expensive to repair (not that individual repairs will be costly but there will be plenty of them) .
 And I like Land Rovers;):D.0

Don't worry Andy, I wasn't considering it because I am only a diddy little thing, and I have limited mobility, so on those occasions when I have been required to get into anything as far off the ground as the average 4wheel drive it has been a rather embarrassing struggle to climb in:o
I'd need a step ladder with me at all times in order to mount in a more decorous manner;)"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0

Can I just advise that Hyundai parts always seem to be expensive??
VW & Skoda are reasonable as are Vauxhall parts and Fords. I know I generalise here, but having to spend alot of my time pricing/quoting etc., I sure as hell know what I would or wouldn't buy!
And some of the cars - can't think of the makes as its late........ the ones that offer 5 year warranty, we have serviced them under warranty and have to stick to the manufacturers spec etc. - you would not believe the servicing schedules on some of them! Even with our competitive labour rate, the service is far too expensive! But we have to stick to what is required to keep the warranty safe. Its like an engine rebuild for every service! Ok, slight exaggeration.... but it is still over the stop - especially if the poor person has low mileage............Genie

Thanks for that Jeannie, it was something I was going to ask about. Any idea if the Kia Ceed has a huge service schedule or very expensive parts? Also, I remember you had a thread with a link to sign a petition so that manufacturers could not insist on the cars being serviced at dealerships so any update on what happened with that?
I wish I could have gone and looked at the car on my own today because now everyone is in love with it (including me) and I am trying to keep saying that it is rather more than I wanted to spend at the moment and that I want to look at the Skoda as well, and I feel rather pressured:mad:
BIL leant me his What Car mags today (he is after a year old Golf and has already sold his Focus). Have spent most of the evening backwards and forwards between the net (trying to find good quotes for this car on-line)and looking at all the cars in WC.
Not sure what I did wrong in the dealership today, apart from admitting I wanted to use the scrappage scheme right from the start, but I certainly didn't get much of a discount and that was even allowing that I was willing to just take one of the two cars they had in stock and not hold out for a specific colour:rolleyes:. Having now seen the Monsoon Blue and the English Pewter I am not so keen on the Abyss Blue or the Black that they had on offer:o:rotfl::rotfl:
No comments about being girlie in my choices lads:D"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0
