Nokia 5800 vs iphone

Main use would be phone, texts and internet use.
Some of the apps on the iphone look useful but perhaps there are similar on the 5800?
It has to be able to connect to my car's bluetooth - I know the iphone does as my son tried his on it and it downloads the phone book. I also have an ipod connector in the car so it allows music to be played from the iphone - pity it doesn't charge it though. I don't know if the 5800 will as on the Seat forum some say it works and others say it doesn't so confusing.
I liked the idea of the 5800 handwriting recognition for texts. It als seems a bit smaller than the iphone.
Based on your needs, I don't think I could justify the extra cost for the iphone.
I'm not sure about the bluetooth/ connection issue - but remember if you order online you can always return it under the DSRs if you are not happy with it.
Gone ... or have I?0 -
I have a 5800 and an iPhone 2G. I use the 5800 most of the time as it has 3G connectivity, however there are times when I hanker after the iPhone's ease of use and slick interface.
They are very different as other posters have stated. The 5800 was not pitched to compete with the iPhone directly, I'd say it was more aimed at people who wanted a smartphone but didn't have the budget to buy something in the iPhone's price range.
My usage for either is mainly as a phone and a music player with some web surfing (I find it particularly useful when out shopping - I use it to make online price comparisons and sometimes look up reviews) and navigation (I love Google Maps). Since the 5800 has all these capabilities and a GPS which the iPhone does not, I find the Nokia in my pocket more often.0 -

The cost certainly is different. However I would rather have a phone that I use that costs more than one that is cheaper but I don't use.
At the moment I'm trying to ignore cost as the 5800 would win hands down if only based on cost.I'm not sure about the bluetooth/ connection issue - but remember if you order online you can always return it under the DSRs if you are not happy with it.
Perhaps if I try it out at CPW I might persuade them to allow me to try and connect it. My nearest store is basically in the middle of a car park.0 -
While the 5800 is a nice phone the interface on the iphone is very slick (and I'm not an iPhone/Apple fan as a rule).
But you need to go and try both and see what you think.
The only thing I thinks a bit odd on the iphone (and the itouch) is no multitasking... I've a windows mobile pda running 03 and on that I can start the music player, drop back to the menu and fire up an ebook reader and use both at the same time, with the Apple op system you can only do one thing at a time... seems a waste ??
You can listen to music at the same time as doing other things on the iPhone.0 -

The ease of use is certainly something I would prefer. They are very different as other posters have stated. That's where I have concerns. I had (still have ) a smartphone - an Orange SPV C500. In its day it was classed as a really good smartphone and even better as I got it on a free upgrade with an OPV Virgin tariff (no monthly payment). However I found it too fiddly for normal everyday use and it was soon confined to a drawer and I went back to a "normal" phone. I worry that the 5800 would end up the same way.My usage for either is mainly as a phone and a music player with some web surfing (I find it particularly useful when out shopping - I use it to make online price comparisons and sometimes look up reviews) and navigation (I love Google Maps). Of course the new 3G S has the GPS powered maps apps with its built in compass which turns the map to the direction you are facing. The demo i watched on the Apple site looked interesting.0 -
OK I had a play with both at CPW this morning.
The iphone was much easier to use and touch screen was very effective - each press instantly recognised. Internet use was really very easy and looked "normal" as it would on a PC. I liked its bigger screen overall - useful for someone with not such good eyesight as in my younger days.
The 5800 I found not so touch sensitive and needed a couple of presses on occasion. Smaller screen overall so not so good that way. It definitely felt more fiddly.
I didn't spend too much time with either but first impressions were that the iphone is much easier to use.0 -
