Can I ask for help about buying for boys please? There's a nine year old and a six or seven year old boy, my nephews (by marriage, and I've not met them yet) but I'm in charge of buying their gifts. I know nothing about boys of that age.

My eldest son is 6 (will be 7 in May), he is obsessed with reading (has just finished reading Harry Potter by himself :T), Lego and drawing.

    Hope thats of some use.
    Slightly worn out mum to 3 (DS1 May 03, DS2 Feb 05, DD1 Feb 08). When i grow up i think i'll become a UN Peace keeper....
  • Yes, at this age it was lego, lego and more lego...

  • Hi all! I've posted this on the Thrifty Gifty thread, and I know lots of you are on there too, but I know some of you arn't - so I'm asking you lovely people too!!

    Some thoughts?

As baby is due mid December (ish!) we're not doing much over Christmas - what I mean by that is that normally we're at my parents for Christmas eve and day (South Wales), the in laws for boxing and the 27th (London), then back to South or West Wales for the 28th (Nan's birthday). This year they're all coming near us - we're not travelling to London with a new born!! We're doing Christmas day with the inlaws in a rented cottage about 20 mins away from us, then my parents and the inlaws together for boxing night, my parents (30 mins away) on the 27th, and again at my parents on 28th for Nan's birthday. Anyway, I digress...

Normally for christmas eve/day I do a big cawl (lovely veggie soup) for the evening meal on Christmas eve - good way to get some decent veggies in you before all the chocolate! - then contribute to the Christmas meal by generally helping out with the cooking and prep, and also pre-preparing sausages wrapped in bacon, and stuffing wrapped in bacon. This year I'm not doing any of this! Other priorities! lol

So what hubby and I thought would be nice is for us to make our own crackers. I've bought kits of ebay to make 12. I'm going to make 7 for christmas day (inlaws, sis in law, an aunt, a gran, me and hubby) and 5 for new year's eve (the only meal we're cooking in that period - for us, my parents and my nan).

However, I need some suggestions for LITTLE things to go in the crackers. I obviously don't want to be spending a fortune, but I don't want them to be little cheap nasty things either (the types of things you normally get in cheap crackers which I actually love!! lol).

For New years eve, I could possibly do miniatures, but it's not very imaginative..... for Christmas day I couldn't as they're not big drinkers....

    Any thoughts at all?

    Thanks all!!

  • hi, I've been on a hunt for mini things for my boyfriend's advent calendar this year, maybe some of the things I've come up with could be used in the crackers?

Any small sweets, funsize bars, that kind of thing
    choc coins
    candy cane
    mini bottle of booze
    Coffee/hot choc sachet?
    Those £1 trolley tokens
    scratchcard
    jelly christmas lolly
    Mini shampoo/body spray/shower gel
    lottery ticket
    Small magnet
    Keyring
D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't important

    Taste The Rainbow :heartsmil
  • Oooo Claire Bear.....if I get my bum into gear at the time I could do magnets/keyrings with a picture of the baby..... thats an option!! Thank you!

Any other thoughts anyone, just incase the baby is late (realistically, because of my due date, the latest I could actually have the baby is Boxing day! lol)?

I make my own crackers every year, and in the past have put things such as:

earrings (costume jewellery ones would be okay of you didn't want to splash out on silver or gold)

handmade beaded bracelets (I bought some elasticated jewellery thread from a craft store, then bought old necklaces etc from charity shops and car boot sales to build up a collection of pretty beads I could use)

    computer memory sticks

Miniature perfumes (I am sometimes cheeky and ask the girls on department store perfume counters to let me have decent sized samples!) This year the boys will have those Lynx Bullet things.

Small make up items for the girls (usually whatever has been in the No7 or Clinique "gift with purchase" during the year!! or a nice nail polish)

Small LED torches (there are currently some good ones with a keyring clip on them in Poundland)

In fact Poundland is quite a treasure trove for cracker-fillers. They have mini USB hubs which you can plug into a keyboard, small "Swiss army knife" style penknives, sachets of computer monitor wipes etc .....
  • I don't make my own crackers but I buy cheap ones (or good ones in the Jan sales:p) and add my own gifts. That way I can make sure the gift matches the person.

I know it isn't important in the grand scheme of things but I do enjoy doing it!:D
