How easy to get another job after being dismissed

I have been suspended from work (work in a bank) and I have a hearing set for next month for Gross Misconduct

I know it will lead to dismissal but how easy is it to get another job in banking after being dismissed from the bankinng industry??

I had considered leaving this job out of my CV but I have been with this employer for 4 years so its a pretty large gap that needs filling on my CV

It depends on the circumstances. What are the details?

People who get suspended do work again of course, but depends on the cirumstances of the dismissal, sector etc.

I work in the retail sector

I had helped a customer out of a situation on a public forum.

Was asked if was a member of the site and i stupidly said yes and asked what i had said and i explained very briefly what i had said and i did explain that i did not do anything wrong as far as i remember regarding procedure and i was told to stop

Next day, got called up saying i was suspended. I was told I gave out too much information to this person. Now a hearing has been set for next month for Gross Misconduct

The information i repeated was already freely available on the site but I think its the fact that I mentioned that I worked for this paticular bank that got me in trouble

I know people who have lost their jobs in retail banking and have got work again no problem - working for four years shows that you are very experience. If I were you I would hand your notice in, as that will save the risk of a bad reference, and I am more than sure (based on my past experience) that you'll get another job in banking again. The question is, do you want to!? Its a stressful and unforgiving environment and I dont think the pay reflects that. This could be an opportunity to do a career you love. Feel free to PM me and I can tell you more :D

I wanted to hand in my notice but I was adviced that even if I hand in my notice that they can still put on the reference, 'suspended pending disciplinary action'!!!!!!!!

So i'll still have a crap reference!

Well you either need to find some technical point which they have got wrong or suggest that you might go public. I would have thought they may agree to you resigning with an agreed bland reference rather than have months of hassle.

    I agree

The thing that puzzles me is that if I wait for the hearing and request to resign there and then, they might also try to say that they have already made the decision to dismiss me so I cannot resign!

I know they are just trying to be difficult but I dont know why, I dont even know how they found out that I was posting on a public forum!!!!! I was not at work when I did it, I was at home, even though we have internet facilities at work, I never use them as I never want to be one to get the blame of anything!

I know of a number of persons who were hauled up for a similar offence at a bank. They were all discussing redundancies at the bank on Facebook. They managed to get off with warnings. If this is a first offence and policy was not clear, I would be busy constructing a defence, not accepting defeat yet. Get copies of company policy around this area, and the company disciplinary procedure and make sure the company follows it to the letter. Also take some form of representation, Union Rep or colleague, as allowed.

    All the best.

No company is allowed to give a derogatory reference anymore. All they can do is say that you worked there from "date" to "date" and not amplify any further.
I would resign to save face but it is tough out there and you might have to look away from banking as others have said.

I agree with Scrooge. It is by no means a fore-gone conclusion that you will be dismissed for this offence.

Check the bank's disciplinary procedures, there will be a section headed 'gross misconduct' which lists the type of offence that will normally be considered to be GM. The list isn't exhaustive, but it is a good indication.

If posting on a public internet forum doesn't fit within one of the headings, and provided there have been no other warnings to staff that this could be viewed as GM (e-mails to staff, notice of staff notice board etc) Then you have a good defence that you did not realise that this was not allowed and/or you did not realise that you would be putting your job at risk if you did this. This is the point - the bank must have made it clear to staff that posting on forums is not allowed and is a dismissable offence.

Stress to them that you did not realise you were doing anything wrong and you had no idea that you were putting your job on the line. Point out that you have been with the bank four years and that you have a clean disciplinary record (if this is the case). Assure them that you will never do anything like this again, and ask for leniency.

Make sure you take a colleague ot TU rep with you, and get that person to take careful notes, because you won't remember half of what was said, afterwards.

You may 'get off' with a final written warning.

Ah okay, in this case someone posted that they received a letter saying their account was being closed and i mentioned the possibilities that could have led to the account getting closed and as i work for the bank, im sure that if he speaks to a manger, they 'might' be able to override the decision

Apparently I was wrong in saying this and now they have me in for Gross Misconduct.

I have heard advisors telling customers this so i honestly didnt beleive it was wrong. I called up an advisor anyway and posed as a random customer to see if they gave away the same info i did online and i got the date, name and time of the persons i spoke to so im hoping to use this as evidence as I know they record conversations and it would be illegal for me to do so

Hope it works in my defence
