Thanks for taking the time to post that - really enjoyed reading it. I wish I had your stamina for shopping as there are so many good deals out there, but unfortunately I have a tolerance of no more than 45 minutes and that's if I'm in a shopping mood. As for Wizard of Oz - those machines seem to either be very, very kind - at least giving lots of bonus rounds and keeping you playing...or very, very evil. Normally whoever I am sitting next to is doing really well and I'm doing crap.Congrats again on the wedding and sounds like you had a great trip!
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
October , NovemberThanks backbiter and lindsey. Your TR's are just what I need to fill the gap until our next trip. Only 6 weeks 5 days to go.0

Julynice TR backbiter, can you give me any tips for LA
going there for only 2 fulll days,
Tips for 2 days in LA? We were there for 6, so here are some suggestions:
We stayed at the Sportsmen's Lodge, not far from Universal. It was recommended on this forum, and we found a good deal on Hotels.com (£70/night, plus $10/day for parking). Really liked the place. Great pool, nice location, very safe.
We went to a baseball game (LA Dodgers). Tickets are plentiful, but booking online via Ticketmaster was impossible as a non-US resident (apparently there is a way but neither I nor the Hotel staff could find it). No problem, though - just turn up as it's a huge stadium that hardly ever sells out. It's $15 for parking, but our top-deck tickets cost just $11 each, which is a bargain. The setting is fantastic and it was a brilliant evening.
We walked down Hollywood Blvd, with all the stars in the pavement, up to the Chinese Theatre. It's a bit downmarket but we enjoyed it a lot. We parked at a meter for $2 for an hour (quarters needed!). Otherwise it's at least $10 for parking.
We took pics of the Hollywood sign, which is up a side street (Franklin Ave, I think) off Hollywood Blvd, at least a mile but more like two east of the Chinese theatre.
We drove to santa Monica, which is really nice. Nice beach and pier, with a main street that's packed with good shops and restaurants and street performers.
We had a fantastic day out at Six Flags Theme park, about 30 miles north. You can get a lot off the gate price using online vouchers if you look (we paid $27 each). It's got some of the biggest and best coasters in the world.
We drove around Sunset Blvd (nothing special) into Beverley Hills and along Rodeo Drive. Very smart!
We took the boys to the cinema in Century City, a big shopping mall near Beverley Hills. It was OK but nothing special. We've been to lots of better shopping Malls in the US.
We went to Pasadena, which is - in US terms - a historic old town not far from LA. It is a really nice place. From there we drove all the way to Venice beach to watch the sunset and have a meal by the ocean. The beach and sunset were lovely, but Venice beach is a dump and we couldn't wait to get out. It's very close to Santa Monica, which is 1000% nicer.
LA is a massive place and driving around is really slow, even on the freeways - there's so much traffic, and I don't think public transport is that good.0 -
Booked for November 28th for 5 nights, when should I get my currency now or later? Expect the pound to get stronger? Damn in a right awkward position0

I was wondering what others thought of the suggestion to get a coupon/savings book? I guess I'll get something at the hotel but that won't be as good and it's a bit late to buy a book now as I'm going on Sunday!
I know you can collect one of them from their office but I'm going on a Sunday so probably won't be able to get it until some time Monday so it doesn't really seem worth it.
Are there any online alternatives does anyone know or anything I can buy from a shop when I get there on Sunday?
Or is it not really worth it at all if I'm only going for a week?0 -

Yes you're a bit late. I would have suggested ordering the 24/7 Magazine, but you can pick this up in the back of taxis and sometimes on the strip. The American Casino Guide is good, but too late to order it. Not sure if there is a book shop on the strip that might sell it. I've only read of places off strip.
Go to https://www.destinationcoupons.com and there is $5 off the Spice Market buffet at Planet Hollywood.
There are often people handing out coupons on the strip so don't confuse them with the !!!!!! slappers or you could miss out.0 -

The Las Vegas Advisor Member Rewards is the one you can purchase online to pick up in Vegas - whether it's worth it or not is really up to you - there's one coupon in the book that if used on its own more than pays for the membership (the Palms 50% off coupon).
The American Casino Guide which is the one you can buy in book shops is published in October/November of each year and is good from then until the end of the following year. Unfortunately as a result they start to become hard to find in shops later in the year...I haven't heard yet that book shops have started selling out but just be aware they may not be as easy to find in traditional book stores by now - but you may want to try one of these options from their website.Gambler's General Store
