2 police dogs die in hot car

Just an update, he is fine this morning but we have to keep an eye on him for a couple of days. To actually take him to the vets is going to be too stressful at the moment and as long as he is drinking and eating and weeing and pooping then he should be ok.marshallka wrote: »I have just told my hubby that one as I read it on the border collie forum.
He has yet to wee all the water out and he does have problems with this in hot weather. Usually he will just stand up and it comes out like a shower. I have just let him out hoping he can do one now cause it is one time when he cannot help doing it in the house. He has no control in this weather. I will have to just keep putting him out every 15 mins in hope. I will certainly ask tomorrow at our vets about his susceptability to future attacks. I have to bring him in from the garden as he plays chasing flies in it until he collapses (not literally like he has tonight though). I think a border will often work themselves to death. They just cannot take it easy. I will post back tomorrow but its going to be a long night. I just hope he is OK. Thanks again for posting back.
I could not get the picture of my mind of him last night. Its was heart breaking and anyone that has seen a dog like this would know, you have to act quick.
I shall keep him in today as its very warm still and just have a little play in the garden.0 -
Thats great, im glad hes ok today. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0

I would be interested to know why you say this?
All handlers I know have their dogs living in the home with them as part of the family.
All Thames Valley police dogs are kept in secure kennels and rarely in houses as they are not allowed to socialise with people other than the handler and immediate family (ie partner and they really prefer if it's only the handler... ) How do I know? I live next door to one
I'd love to pet him but I value my digits :rotfl:
Apparently the handler never planned to be in the station for any amount of time but was dragged off for something or other - I don't know what or if anything warrents leaving 2 dogs in a private vehicle (they shouldn't be in a private vehicle if he's on duty - I heard it was a hire van, something the police often use if they have vehicle malfuctions or if the dogs are "on duty" but training and not front line - this is due to budget restraints as they can't afford to have "spare" vehicles and hire vans don't have AC...) but that's what I've heard anyway... if he wasn't planning on staying then he'd have had no reason to place them in the kennels...
Police and RSPCA are investigating it and taking it seriously... and trust me the handler would be devastated so maybe being less judgemental until they advise of what exactly happened?

What about the vet who left his dogs for 6 hours in his car?
How come that wasn't in the news? Apparently up to 10 dogs died in the heatwave.

Must admit i am pleased to hear this, i remember how hot that day was and there wouldn't be a cat in hells chance that i would have taken my dogs anywhere in the car, unless an absolute emergency. I am sure he didn't mean to kill his dogs but i do believe he neglected his duty to look after the poor dogs, and they must have suffered a horrific death.
A complete lack of common sense on his part, which he will have to live with forever, such a sad story.:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

Yes, have to agree - he is expected to have common sense in his position - he showed that he doesnt have that and should lose his job.0

I am astounded that the PC is to be prosecuted, but pleased. Thought it may be a McCann style cover up by the powers above.
On sunny days, I never took Jaf with me, always left his sad little face while I got the goods, came home and then walked him.
The reason being, I would be stopped by someone, talk for 20 minutes and meanwhile my dog is dying in the heat of the car. So easy to be distracted.
Good for prosecuting, I don't believe the PC will lose his job, though he should. He should have set an example to us all.0
