Sack him! He was off duty handler but took the dogs with him whilst calling into station. Of course he should have brought them in with him.

Lets see how the RSPCA handle this one.

LOL well if they can shoot an innocent unarmed man on the Tube and get away with it then I don't hold out much hope for justice for the dogs.

I still remember the case of the Essex police dog trainer who disciplined a dog by punching it so hard he killed it. Again, nothing happened.

I would be interested to know why you say this?
All handlers I know have their dogs living in the home with them as part of the family.

Different forces have different procedures for kennelling police dogs, all handlers I know do not have their dogs in their homes. Obviously this varies across the country.

... you can't be serious. Most are not even house-trained.[/QUOTE

My german shepherd came from the Police she is a retired police dog and she is housetrained ,I think you will find that they all are.
  • That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.

chez22 - if you have limited knowledge of dog training then please stop posting so much on a topic you know so very little about. All Guide Dogs are trained to do this, and so I suppose some police forces probably do it too - it means the dog won't stop for a poo when chasing a burglar!

On the topic of the dogs at Nottingham, they were in a private car in the HQ car park, no air-con as in a police van.

The RSPCA have been asked to investigate.

Oh I do apologise, I've only been a police kennel person for over 10 years, obviously I haven't learned a single thing in all that time. Please stop being so patronising.

In my force, most are not. Seems to vary across the country from other commenters.

We took a failed police dog and whilst she wasn't fully house trained it didn't take long to train her - they are extremely intelligent animals. In fact, I have have also had quite a few puppy farm rescues here to 'normalise' before they go on to their new homes. Most dogs catch on to the fact that their toilet is outside as dogs are by nature clean animals.

What I don't understand is why this idiot of a police officer left the dogs in a car for any length of time knowing how hot it was - especially when there are kennel facilities at the HQ he was visiting.

I'd like to see how he'd like to be shut in a car for that amount of time. those poor dogs would have have an extremely traumatic and painful death :( I hope he'll be suitably punished but I doubt it very much. Even my 18 yr old son was in tears when we watched this on the news :(

Torby btw, your boy is gorgeous :) He reminds me of my lovely girl that I sadly lost at the age of 5. Took me a good 10 yrs to be able to go near another GSD without welling up as she was such a wonderful girl. She was devoted to my boys when they were small and whilst we never left her alone with them she always heard their cries or sensed if they were poorly before we did - my late Dad used to say she was like Nana from Peter Pan!

The guy is probably distraut for what he has done and a stupid mistake that he should have known better. I think that this is a stupid person making a stupid mistake not another piece of ammo to use agasint our police force which is mostly hardworking and good depsite what they have to put up with. I am also sure that the amount of money the police spend training these dogs they aren't going to be happy at what happened and what its done for their reputation.
People are always very quick to criticse the police for the actions of one or two idoits that are in the force but seem to not be intrested in all the stuff the police have to put up with and spending months working on a case only for the person to claim to come from a broken family, they didn't mean to and then be given a don't do it again your free to go.

Should we have stupid people making stupid mistakes in our police force though?

Even a low life would know you DONT leave a living creature in a metal box when its the hottest day of the year.

What sort of entrance exams do they have now - the few Ive met recently seemed like they would have difficulty getting through a GCSE let alone becoming a defender of the society.
