I am just putting this on here to give you an idea. It is a link to a review of my router. Classed as obsolete now but has been working for me none stop for three years. I have several pcs connected wirelessly and two laptops, one an old toshiba. In this I have the laptop adapter featured half way down the page.

Most modern laptops do (some don't) but if yours is old it is unlikely. If not you will have to buy one. Nowadays you can get a usb dongle or if you have a pc card slot on your laptop you can get one that fits in there. You usually need to run a set up with them.

The laptop is a packard bell... model versa 400... it's about 4 years old and cost around 700.00 from pc world.. can not find the manual for it.. so thinking will have to take it to pc world and see what they can offer .

    GIRLPOWER,

I noticed you say that you have broadband (modem??) connected to your BT socket in the hallway. But you are also connecting this "new" router in your bedroom too.

If that is the case, you can't do that. You can only have ONE broadband device connected to your BT line.

You will also have to access the setup facility on your new router. This is normally done on most routers by typing http://192.168.1.1 in Internet explorer, while your PC is connected by a network (ethernet) cable to the router, and the router is turned on.

If that doesn't work, you really need to find a manual for it. Have you got one? Or if not, can it be downloaded? This will tell you the actual address of the router if it isn't 192.168.1.1. You may also need to do a "factory reset" on the router just in case the previous owner changed the address. Normally, a reset is performed by holding down certain buttons on the router, or some routers have a small hole where you insert a thin wire/paper clip to reset it.
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!

Oh no!! right let me get this straight... The downstairs computer that I am using now connected to the broardband is the computer I should be installing the router to... I unplug the silver thing with speedtouch and 2 green lights that tesco sent me and put the router in it's place.. then i install the disc and install it... then the laptop unstairs will pick up on this router even though it's not connected to it..... have i got it????
Sorry, what I posted was incorrect; I thought your new Actiontec device had a built in modem. On closer inspection it doesn't so you'll need a separate ADSL modem device. If your Speedtouch modem has an Ethernet socket then you can connect it to the router with Ethernet cable and you're all set. However, if it doesn't you'll have to buy another modem, or better buy a wireless ADSL modem router with everything in one device.

    GIRLPOWER,

I'm sure we can all sort you out without you getting someone in.

Could you find out what the model is of this Actiontec router? Have a look on the back, or underside of it. Also, look at this link, as this shows a selection of Actiontec wireless devices:
    http://www.actiontec.com/support/cable_dsl_routers.html

    It'll probably say GTxxxxx, R10xxxx, R30xxxx, AUxxxx ....

If we can work out what router you're using, we could take you through getting it working.

Nikki, honest it isn't half as complicated as it may appear, most things are set up automatically by the set up programme's with the routers and the adapters. Then the only other thing is securing your network. Again this isn't overly complicated but if you run into probs there are people on here who will assist you. Lots of them work during the day so you will also get some good advice when they get home.

THANKS EVERYONE... The router I have pruchased gives a model number of GT701-WG... the modem I have from tesco (speedtouch thomson 330) does not have any empty ports on it to plug anything else in so from what you are saying I will need to get a seperate modem for it to work.

located my router from the above link and though this was innfo needed... can anyone tell me if I can get it to work from the modem I have???

Does the Actiontec Wireless Router function as a DSL modem?
No. The Actiontec Wireless Router acts as a router only to share the connection from an external modem.

Do I need a specific cable or DSL modem to use with the Actiontec Wireless Router?
No. The Actiontec Wireless Router will work with virtually any Ethernet cable or DSL modem. WIRELESS

nikki, this page for the actual model of the router you quoted suggests that it will also act as a modem. Are you sure of the model number?
