Mine arrived today. Decluttering it but stepped out for a while and its gone into standby.

Had a go, but can't figure out how to get it to wake up.

    What's the magic button?

    Quote from the manual:

To exit standby mode, press the power button or open the display depending on how you set the options on the Advanced tab.

You cannot make the computer exit standby mode by pressing a key or touching the touch pad.

Thanks. Mrs Me walked into the room and figured it out straight away. I'm sure I tried the power button, but it did nothing for me. Must be an art to it. Chhers.

If you get the Dell 1300 laptop in this current deal it already has the wifi (wireless) card built into it. Therefore, if you want to connect your PC to wireless as well, you will need to buy something like the following:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=63002

This plugs into the USB port on the PC.

I bought the above from ebuyer but cannot get it to work after many frustrating hours of trying... does anyone know of a complete idiots guide to setting this up so that I can try agian from scratch?

I'm no expert (so probably can't help) but usually in cases like this people will want to know what PC's/laptop's you're trying to connect, what versions of Windows, what router etc so the more info you give the better the chance of one of the techies sorting it out.

  • Good point - well the laptop is the Dell £339 Laptop 15.4" widescreen, wireless, DVDRW mentioned in the first post, the wireless usb adapter is the ebuyer one and my PC is a Dell Dimension 8400. All I want to be able to do is set up a simple ad-hoc network so that I can use the laptop in another room when someone else is using the main PC.. I tried the wireless network setup wizard in windows XP but cannot get ti to work.

I also seem to have done something to the PC as it displays a Log on to Windows box on startup with an error message but when i click OK it goes to the welcome screen.

As I said I'm no expert so forgive me suggesting this but do you actually have a wireless router?

I've recently networked mine and I have a PC upstairs connected by USB cable to a BT wireless modem/router. Downstairs I have a PC into which I've fitted a wireless card but could have used a USB dongle like you've bought from ebuyer, and then there's the Inspiron 1300 like yours with the wireless card pre-installed.

Setting up the downstairs PC took some time as it couldn't see the network so I physically moved it closer and once it detected the network it was fairly straightforward (although the BT software helped a lot). Same when I got the laptop although that took only a minute or so to set up.

No just have a normal asdl modem - but I read in Web User that if I just want to share a wireless internet connection all i needed was a wireless usb adapter (dongle thingy) for the PC and then a laptop with a wireless card - and the ebuyer one was one of the cheapest adapters + had good reviews. Apparently this is the simplest way to set up a wireless network - I would hate to try the other ones if this is the 'easy' way!

Anyway, I have used system restore to get everything back to how it was 2 days ago until I can figure out what I am doing wrong. :(

Thanks for trying to help though...

    Right, I said I was no expert didn't I?

You must be talking about ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), at least that what Google tells me :D so a little ferreting has given this:

  • Well, Bubba_Shaboo you are much more of an expert than I am - the info at that link you found made much more sense than all the other tech speak I found on other sites :):)

I followed all the steps given at that link and it seems I am nearly there - apart from one crucial thing - the laptop says I am connected to the network I set up but when I open firefox (or explorer) I just get the page not found page - so I cannot use the shared internet connection on the laptop..

I found this thread which I thought might provide the answer but it just made my brain hurt again :)

So if anyone knows what I need to do I would be very grateful - so near yet so far...

Thanks again for your efforts Bubba_Shaboo - seems you've nearly cracked it
