It's best to just reinstall from scratch. Email dell and ask them for the windows xp home sp2 cd + any other cds required. They are sending me the whole lot of cds for free. :D
Which cds is that that so I can make a list to send them ,
    Thanks.

I just told them some of the crap that came pre installed was causing a problem with AOL (which was actually true) and that I wanted to re-install everything and they said all the necessary discs are on the way.

If anyone is having a problem with the battery light flashing amber (see the link in my thread in the techhie forum) then they may want to tell them about that too. I've got a second 6 cell battery coming free of charge too!

    [uninstall

    1) AOL
    2) Tiscali
    3)Wanadoo
    4) Corel (it's only a 60 day trial and if you have a camera then you will have photo software on disk)
    5) Mcaffee (30 day trial and AVG ,Sygate and Windows Bitdefender will do the same job for free

    6) possibly Microsoft Works as it's not even got word on it (replace with open office which is free and compatable with Microsoft office)

you may get an error message about Sonic updates asking for a disk but I have posted a fix for that on the techie section, download the patch and that will stop
    /QUOTE]

Many thanks BROWNTOA I had done some of these- but I was getting the problem with the sonic update and it has been driving me crazy !

Is it just me or is the laptop intollerably slow with 256mb ram - even with all the dell crap removed. I don't know if it is the norton I installed or the laptop itself.

It is Norton, without a doubt.

My 1300 flies even with 256mb RAM.

OK, I think I will take norton off in that case. What antivirus do you suggest I should get?
