  • Sorry, just another question: does 'title' give any weight? im just struggling to make them all unique if this counts?

    Titles are very important. Browsers load them first before crawling your content. Moreover, page titles appear right below your url in search results, hence title tag provides the first impression of a web page and can either capture the attention of a visitor or compel him or her go away.

  • thanks quqabita, that has cleared things up a bit. i have taken some advice from people and have just spent the last four hours adjusting my titles and descriptions etc. i have tried to adopt a few techniques from others but im struggling not to over-do it and i keep repeating the same words over and over. Here is an example which i have done to show what i mean. its not a very important page however, you will get the jist of what im saying and trying to say in my titles etc. i have overloaded this one and would like to see if anyone can come up with a better one.

    <title>CCTV INSTALLATIONS LEEDS, CCTV INSTALLER LEEDS, CCTV FITTER IN LEEDS, CCTV SYSTEMS LEEDS, C.C.T.V. LEEDS, CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION LEEDS, CCTV CAMERA SURVEILLANCE LEEDS, HOME CCTV, DOMESTIC CCTV, RESIDENTIAL CCTV, COMMERCIAL CCTV, BUSINESS CCTV LEEDS, CCTV SECURITY LEEDS</title>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
    <meta name="description" content="CCTV INSTALLATIONS IN LEEDS, CCTV OVER CAT5 LEEDS, IP CAMERAS, ISP CAMERAS, REMOTE CCTV, CCTV INSTALLER LEEDS, CCTV FITTER LEEDS, CCTV SYSTEMS LEEDS, C.C.T.V. LEEDS, CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION LEEDS, CCTV CAMERA SURVEILLANCE LEEDS, HOME CCTV, DOMESTIC CCTV, RESIDENTIAL CCTV, COMMERCIAL CCTV, BUSINESS CCTV LEEDS, CCTV SECURITY LEEDS, WIRELESS CCTV LEEDS, HARD WIRED CCTV">
    <meta name="keywords" content="Leeds, cctv, c.c.t.v., security, systems, Closed, circuit, television, IP, ISP, remote, cameras, wired, wireless, surveillance">
    <meta name="revisit-after" content="2 days">
    <meta name="Owner" content="Martin Scott">
    <meta name="Author" content="pgup@btinternet.com">
    <meta name="Content-Language" content="en">
    <meta name="Copyright" content="J-RA">
    <meta name="Page-Topic" content="CCTV INSTALLATIONS LEEDS, CCTV INSTALLER LEEDS, CCTV FITTER IN LEEDS, CCTV SYSTEMS LEEDS, C.C.T.V. LEEDS, CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION LEEDS, CCTV CAMERA SURVEILLANCE LEEDS, HOME CCTV, DOMESTIC CCTV, RESIDENTIAL CCTV, COMMERCIAL CCTV, BUSINESS CCTV LEEDS, CCTV SECURITY LEEDS</title>">

    just for the record, i have no idea what im doing and just guessing. As you will see, things are very repeatative and getting very long in length. do i need all this? my other pages are going the same way! i have no idea what the 'topic' is for?

    do not cram the Title tag with keywords / key phrases, keep it shorter than that.. max 8 - 10 words.

    Do not put your titles and description in CAPS either... do you remember ever seeing all CAPS in google results?

    Google take the title and description for returning results. Also the description to me reads like what would normally appear in the keywords tag.

    Good practices for page title tags
    • Accurately describe the page's content - Choose a title that effectively communicates the
    topic of the page's content.
    Avoid:
    • choosing a title that has no relation to the content on the page
    • using default or vague titles like "Untitled" or "New Page 1"
    • Create unique title tags for each page - Each of your pages should ideally have a unique
    title tag, which helps Google know how the page is distinct from the others on your site.
    Avoid:
    • using a single title tag across all of your site's pages or a large group of pages
    • Use brief, but descriptive titles - Titles can be both short and informative. If the title is too
    long, Google will show only a portion of it in the search result.
    Avoid:
    • using extremely lengthy titles that are unhelpful to users
    • stuffing unneeded keywords in your title tags

    Make use of the "description" meta tag
    A page's description meta tag gives Google and other search engines a summary of what the page is
    about. Whereas a page's title may be a few words or a phrase, a page's description meta tag might
    be a sentence or two or a short paragraph. Google Webmaster Tools provides a handy content
    analysis section that'll tell you about any description meta tags that are either too short, long, or
    duplicated too many times (the same information is also shown for <title> tags). Like the <title> tag,
    the description meta tag is placed within the <head> tag of your HTML document.

    Good practices for description meta tags
    • Accurately summarize the page's content - Write a description that would both inform and
    interest users if they saw your description meta tag as a snippet in a search result.
    Avoid:
    • writing a description meta tag that has no relation to the content on the page
    • using generic descriptions like "This is a webpage" or "Page about baseball
    cards"
    • filling the description with only keywords
    • copy and pasting the entire content of the document into the description meta
    tag
    • Use unique descriptions for each page - Having a different description meta tag for each
    page helps both users and Google, especially in searches where users may bring up
    multiple pages on your domain (e.g. searches using the site: operator). If your site has
    thousands or even millions of pages, hand-crafting description meta tags probably isn't
    feasible. In this case, you could automatically generate description meta tags based on
    each page's content.
    Avoid:
    • using a single description meta tag across all of your site's pages or a large
    group of pages
  • oops! forgot about that file...silly me! thanks

  • I missed this thread when it first started. I just quickly checked the site and it looks nice and clean, but I think it should be modified. Perhaps what I will say has been mentioned already. Being lazy I did not read the last few pages, sorry.

    Below is what I would look at changing:

    1. Graphic Menu

    Visually it looks nice, but as a potential customer it would be a pointless chore to have to click the various numbers, trying to establish what 'hides' within each menu. By the time I get to the end of the menu system, I could possibly have forgotten where I saw the 'Intercom and Door Entry System' option were it to be the nearest to what I was looking for. Will the customer really want to click through 3 different numbers to hopefully find what he is looking for?

    If yo uare going to keep the menu system the same, just be aware of one thing. Some of your graphic titles in the menu differ from others. In the sense that in some graphics you have the first letter of each word as a capital letter. In others all but the very first letter in the graphic is capitalised. 'Visual display assistance' vs 'Security Alarms' are examples of what I mean.

    Keep the menu clear, simple and accessible.

    2. 'Home'

    Remove the word 'Home' on your home page. I would have thought it would have been obvious to the user when they are on the home page.

    I would say that using the horizontal navigation, you could consider making a page option become highlighted when the user is on that specific page.

    3. Company Logo

    Your logo is great, but make the logo become an automatic 'home' web link. Many users see the logo as a natural home page link.

    4. Contact Form Page

    Fair enough I am nit-picking here, but the first thing I saw was 'clear' and 'send' buttons. Maybe capitalise the first letter in each button (sorry!).

    If you can provide a landline number as well.

    5. Feedbacks

    Change this menu option to 'Feedback'.

    6. External Links

    If you are going to have these, I'd consider removing these from your home page and creating a seperate web page for them. I'm a little confused though with what the shop Next has to do with your line of business. If you are going to keep extrenal links on your site to generate revenue on click throughs etc, it is best to make them relate to your subject IMO.

    I think you can make improvements but you are not far away from having a good simple site. My main concern is your vertical menu system, it's a bit crazy for me. Perhaps the layout need to be tweaked just a little, as I think it looks a bit blog-type. However that is probably just my crazy mind thinking that, sorry :)

    Good luck though and really push hard on the traffic stakes. Definately get your web address on that van asap, if you have not already. Sorry if I was being picky with the above, mate.

    Me and the gang!!!
  • Hi, sorry been away for a while but im back now and hoping to crack on with the site. work has been so slow and so the site has had to wait. i have had a little play with the tags etc but my rankings seem up and down all the time and quite erratic.
    i did update some tags and headers etc using all the kind info i was given on here but google is a funny fish! sometimes id update the site and google etc would take a very long time to show this in results.
    one time, i updated it and then left it a month or so. by this point, google had not acknowledged the updates so i did them again -guess what - google let me sit for another 2 weeks before deciding to update my results to the first update! crazy!

    Again, id appreciate it if anyone can tell me if im doing wrong with the tags and headers etc. Ive had a go but cant afford to pay anyone yet to professionaly 'finish it'.
    some of you may see that i have updated my urls too to reflect my services. I did buy several urls but too much advertising on and offline has been done with my original domain name and i dont want to have to pay hosting and maintainance on all the domains -one is more than enough!

    so, i had www.m-t-i.co.uk as my main domain name but this doesnt reflect my services as people mentioned. I have now got several things like www.m-t-i.co.uk/electricians-in-leeds.php im aware this is not the best idea but my homepage needs some work to reflect/list all my catagories. Will this new structuring work/help at all?

    thanks, martin

    thanks! some of these have or need to be implemented but im unsure how to edit my code myself and cant afford designer prices at this moment in time :(

    thanks -cant figure out how to change the code myself to get them all listed as one menu on the homepage. this is currently why homepage has 'no' content
    2. 'Home'

    Remove the word 'Home' on your home page. I would have thought it would have been obvious to the user when they are on the home page.
    will do - must have been overlooked when designed as template used for all pages. i take it should be left on every internal page
    I would say that using the horizontal navigation, you could consider making a page option become highlighted when the user is on that specific page.
    i managed to get designer to highlight' the mouse overs but to do this io need to figure out how to get them all one one menu is suppose so that they will show up no matter what page a visitor is on.
    next problem - unless they are very small, the user wouldnt necessarilly see the highlighted menu link unless they scrolled down as there are so many.
    anyway of getting them to rotate so the highlighted one would be at the top everytime?
    3. Company Logo

    Your logo is great, but make the logo become an automatic 'home' web link. Many users see the logo as a natural home page link.
    logo not all that good and was a quick fix. not on too many things yet (van etc) so may change. will make logo link to homepage -thanks. must have been another oversight and cant believe i didnt see it!
    4. Contact Form Page

    Fair enough I am nit-picking here, but the first thing I saw was 'clear' and 'send' buttons. Maybe capitalise the first letter in each button (sorry!).
    cheers! first impressions! after spending so many hours, you begin to loose interest/concentration! :)
    If you can provide a landline number as well.
    yes, i thought this but not sure how to upload the 'logo' for neatness and how to get its 'possition' code. maybe i should just plaster it on every page at the top? dont want it to upset my priority tags etc
    5. Feedbacks

    Change this menu option to 'Feedback'.
    will do - i wondered why this was done!
    6. External Links
