Hey, I just realised that nobody answered your above questions.

H1, H2 etc refers to the different headings on the page. H1 being the main one, etc.

CSS refers to Casading Style Sheets. I.e You create a template page for your website with the details that appear on each page (menu items, links, footers) and use that to create each subsequent page.

Check out the following website for more HTML info: w3schools.com

If you're still stuck then I'll try and give you further help.

hi, thanks for noticing and responding! all i know so far is what you have mentioned in your answer regarding the topics in question. although i dont know very much and could not write a html page etc from the top of my head, i can read my pages and have noticed that there does not seem to be any <H> etc and just wondered if this is correct or am i loosing valuable wieght on these items? i would love it someone could have a look for me? i can email one over no probs. thanks again

i think you may be getting confused

setting up a 301 redirect means that your new domain name does not have any hosting capabilities for it (ie, you cant put pages or any information on it), it is simply set up to redirect to your main domain name

from what i believe/ have read today, there are many ways to set up a 301 and many ways to use them? i may be wrong but i have read that people have a non key rich domain as the main site they use. they then buy several domains at a later stage for whatever reason (new products and/or key rich) and they have any visitors to these new urls, be redirected to the main site. although i have picked up that google etc can define these as 'doorways' etc and that a single page site with rubbish and stuffed content can lead to being punished.

i do take into account what you have said and thank you for that but i think you may be also taking about say, someone wanting to permanantly change their main url to a new one etc? correct me if im wrong as im still learning but thanks for the input

PM me if you want and I'll take a look.

You don't have to have any headers on a page! It's not mandatory.

    kindest regards, martin
  • I know your concerns about your home phone umber and spam calls, but as someone who has 10 years previous experience doing websites, and as a customer who searches for local tradesman via the internet I'd be looking for your phone number in clear bold typeface on the top right of a page.If it was my website, I'd have a contact number on the header of every page. Nice design tho.

Yup, agree. Phone number has to be on every page of the site.

Also e-mail contact details, or an online form where people can fill in their details for you to phone them back.....

Any luck in finding a web address that's not taken, like

    theleedselectrician.co.uk
    leedselectrician.org
    best-leeds-electrician.net

If you do get a distinctive address like this, you need to burn it into the public's mind. On your business card (you DO have a business card, don't you?), on your letterhead, in every other piece of advertising you do.

Is there a BNI in the Leeds area? This might be a good avenue to drum up more business if they don't already have an electrician in their midst.

Well done Martin, I am trying my hand at creating a website, I have bought a couple of domains, but signed up to a hosting company before I really knew what I was doing.

The issue for me seems to be how to understand the control panel, incidentally, does anyone know of the easiest hoster where you save a template, build it as you want, then place it on the web?

That seems to be my problem, I have a design, but not sure how to get it from a to b!

Download some FTP software, I use FileZilla.. see here

hi, yes most people mention each page should clearly show email and tel number etc. There is an online form on the site 'contact me' page but i think ill still opt for putting details on every page. i have my growing list and will be making a start on all the changes very shortly in the next day or so and once i have all my answers.

BNI - Thanks! never heard of this group before and they have at least two meeting places in my town -defo be there on the next one! god, they do meet early but i can see why. other bonus is that they hold one at my local david loyd centre, although ill have to focus on then going to work afterwards and not for a swim in the outdoor pool and jacuzzi!

    Hi Martin,

My best advice for scoring high in Google is to concentrate on content, search engines love content, the more the better especially when it's constantly being updated.

I have a blog on my site in which I talk about current technology and other things connected to my business. I'm not overly concerned if real people read it because my actual target are the search engines and they absolutely lap it up.

There's plenty of things you can blog about the world of an electrician, whether it be current wiring regs or interesting jobs you've completed.

Give it a go, you've nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Just a thought, do your suppliers have websites? Would they be willing to trade links with you, these are another thing that search engines like.

All the best with your site.

You're not a Leeds fan are you?
