My only communication has been with the call centre. The exact same thing happened to me 5 months ago but i got a refund. This time i get nothing because they deny that the funds showed as clear after 4pm (i am lying they think).

yes it is unusual to withdraw money so soon after depositing but it does clearly expose the fact that banks deliberately give debits priority over deposits. Deliberately delaying a deposit and giving favour to debits is a SCAM no doubt about it.

What about your receipt at the counter, you said the cashier showed you it was cleared funds. I dont accept this as Fraud, it has happened to me plenty of times and there is no conspiracy. Computers and how they are used are not fool proof. Everyone knows deposits over the counter after anything between 3.30pm onward do not show as cleared funds untill the following day. Im suprised you were allowed to withdraw. Each time this has happened to me I have spoken to the bank (calmly) and they have apologised / explained / refunded any charge.

i did call the bank and speak to them calmly but they refused to refund the charge on the grounds that they deny the money would have showed as clear after 4pm

update: Barclays complaints team have just called me. They made me explain the problem again but then told me they were not going to refund the charge. They said, "Although the money was showing as CLEAR, it is your responsibility to know the banking system".

I asked who made the decision not to refund. The reply was, "the decision is automatic, we just have a responsbility by the FSA to deal with all complaints".

"But the complaint has not been dealt with i said"? She said, "yes but i have called you about the complaint and that is all we are required to do. Is that all sir?"

I said, "so you should have a warning on the statement saying that although it shows clear funds, the funds may not actually be clear. Or not show the funds as being clear in the first place!". She replied, "There is nothing more i can do about this, if you have a problem then go to the ombusman".

So they admit that the funds show as clear but it is my responsibility to know that the system is !!!!!!!!

I want to know what sort of brains i am sharing this planet with. Who agrees with the bank on this and thinks this is not fraud?
No reply = agree with bank

no reply does not mean people agree with the bank and I do hope you are not just trying to start something here. I think you have over dramatised your thread with the title, threads like this run the risk of turning this very helpfull and informative forum into a farce and scare away people with genuine matters needing advice. I will not be following up on this thread further. Good luck with everything.

your effort to help on this subject has been pure sheepish anyway. The truth is that nobody on this forum can say anything other than, "be carefull, learn the system".

Well i'm on your side mate. If it said it was clear then it should be cleared end of! To be honest i have been charged in the past for being slightly over my overdraft and i have popped down and saw the personal banker and i have always had it repaid - He/She can do this on their computer there and then!

It's a shame you can't have intelligent systems, i.e when i got charged £22 for being over my Overdraft, i used the wrong card (My bad i know) as i have 4 accounts - Normal Salary paid account, Bills account (where all my bills come out via DD), Food account (self explanatory) and savings account.

All these show up on my online banking page, and when i got charged for using the wrong card my total balance over the account was In credit of over a few thousand. They really should look at it as a whole!
  • I *think* the same day involves 3pm rather then 4?

yes you are correct herbertthehelper, i was told 5 months ago that the cut-off was 3pm, not 4pm. has it changed or are there 2 cut-offs designed to confuse people.

thanks also to Deefadog. I accept the charges if i have made a mistake or badly budgeted but this was not a mistake.

They shold not be showing money as clear that is not clear.
They should not be shuffling statements at midnight unless the cut-off is midnight.

My grief is not about the charge, I am upset with the fact that people accept this level scam like it is part of life!

as many have pointed out here, ask for something in a reasoned, polite manner and you will often get refunded despite a rule to the contrary.
however, calling a bank fraudsters, scammers etc will simply justify their refusal.
engage your brain, be nice- it pays dividends.

Update: i have just found out that if i had gone into the branch to withdraw the money then the withdrawal would have gone onto next day statement and would not get charged. It was because i withdrew from a cashpoint the debit was not passed over to next day.

Today i deposited £20 at 4.30pm then withdrew £20 at 5.00pm. The statement showed both transactions marked to be passed to next day. if i had withdrew from cashpoint then i would have been scammed
