Barclays Fraud Exposed

This is deliberate fraud, i see no other description for it. I currently have a complaint logged with Barclays regarding the following situation:

June 22nd - 4.30pm: Deposited £140 at Barclays counter. The clerk gave me a new balance showing the CLEARED funds. Online banking showed the deposit being made at 4.30pm and is CLEAR which is correct.

June 22nd - 4.55pm: An urgent problem requires me to withdraw £130 from cash machine, this is 25 minutes after placing the deposit and it showing as CLEAR. The cash machine balance showed the earlier deposit as being CLEAR.

Barclays charged me £22 fee for being £130 over my limit. This is because the deposit happened after 4.00pm which is their cut off time. Although the withdrawal happened after the earlier deposit, the withdrawal showed as same day but the deposit was delayed. BTW, i withdrew from Halifax machine, not barclays (worse!)

I logged a complaint about this because the deposit was showing as CLEAR after I made it. I repeated the deposit process to find that i was not imagining things, the deposit after 4.00pm was showing CLEAR. To my amazement, the statement shuffled at midnight to show the deposit as being made a day later but the withdrawal remained at the correct time

This is what the statement does at Barclays...

On the 22nd June this is what the statement shows
22nd June - 4.30pm: £140 cash deposit
22nd June - 4.55pm: £130 cash withdrawal
Balance: £10

On the 23rd June this is what the statement shows
22nd June - 4.55 £130 cash withdrawal
Balance: £130 Overdrawn
23rd June - No Time Given: £140 deposit
Balance: £10

So although the money was showing in my account as clear on 22nd, they shuffled the statement at midnight so it showed as a deposit on 23rd. They charged me for that!

1. Barclays have denied that cash deposited after 4.00pm shows as clear in the account. The call centre claims that it will not show until next day. They have challenged me to get a screen shot of my statement after depositing after 4.00pm. Everyone with at least little bank experience knows that if you place a cash deposit at ANY TIME, it shows immediately and can be withdrawn. If you ask the clerk for a balance after depositing cash, the balance will show the cash deposit (including after 4.00pm)

2. Why did the withdrawal at a Halifax machine show up as same day (4.55pm) but the deposit at a Barclays branch got shifted to next day?

Can you explain it then cos I can't. Barclays have told the OP that the money paid in is not cleared funds yet they are able to use those funds. I don't get it. It's not fraud but it is intriguing.

hold on..... example for slow people.

    1. Giving access to cleared funds then rearranging the statement to show it was not clear a day later is FRAUD

Are you now denying paying in and taking money out of the account?

You haven't and unfortunately it isn't fraud however I am intrigued with the fact of what they told you.

Barclays quote: Cash paid into your account after 4.00pm will not show on your balance until next day. Withdrawals show immediately

The money i deposited after 4.00pm DID show on my balance and was CLEAR. No mistake here, the deposit showed on the statement and both balances (current/clear) showed the clear funds

Post 1 states 2 points. The first one states Barclays told you(that is either branch or telephony). The question is which one?
I think you need to clarify whether the personal reserve thingy is also part of the cleared funds issue(cos I can't work out why you got charged yet).

It's not fraud, most Banks have a cut-off time where transactions at the counter won't actually show on a statement until the next working day.

But...if you stay calm then I reckon most banks would see that a refund of charges on this occasion may be in order. The point is that the cashier showed you that your deposit had been cleared, and didn't warn you that in fact it wouldn't show on your statement until the next working day. That could be argued by you an an omission on their part, which misled you on this occasion.

Thing is, you say you have a 'complaint logged'. Please tell me you didn't complain in the same vein that you posted your OTT first post? If you did, if you accused them of fraud or got angry with your complaint then they probably won't look so sympathetically at your case.

I used to work for a Bank. They can refund charges if a customer has a valid case for discretion. But have you already blown your chances I wonder? Calm down and maybe follow up your complaint in a much calmer mood tomorrow, hoping they see your point and will understand that you were upset when you first complained. They can do a refund of charges at the branch.

Can you change your title at all? It's a little silly for a run-of-the mill complaint. Such things happen (not often, because not many people deposit money then withdraw it minutes later...).

people please listen. The money was deposited after 4pm and showed on my statement as CLEAR at that moment. After midnight the statement changed to show the deposit as happening a day later. The withdrawal i made after 4pm remained at the correct time. Please explain why the deposit was pushed forward a day but not the withdrawal?

maybe not fraud, but definately a scam

Debits appear first before credits is the answer however you got charged for something that does appear strange imho which is why we are trying to find out why and to get you a refund. If it had been a weekend then its a no brainer but it isn't which is the confusing part. Who specifically at Barclays told you as per point 1 on post 1?

We did listen. My answer was here (from my post above):

'The point is that the cashier showed you that your deposit had been cleared, and didn't warn you that in fact it wouldn't show on your statement until the next working day. That could be argued by you an an omission on their part, which misled you on this occasion'.

I take it you mean that you 'asked the cashier for a balance' and that balance included the deposit you had just made? It would have done. But that's NOT a 'statement'.

No scam. But if you play it right you should get a refund IMHO as the cashier should have mentioned the fact that the deposit was showing on the balance but wouldn't actually appear on your statement until the next working day.
