I have just been onto the o2 website and they have said that I can get 3.5 Mbps (according to BT) so does that mean it could be quicker? did you perform this check prior to installation? if so what speed did it say you could get?

Ah, O2 told me I could get up to 14Mbps and I'm on 11 so maybe your problem isn't BT just being tossbags.

Are you in a virgin media area? You can pretty much guarantee the speed with them as it's fibre optic so much more efficient.

Put your postcode in here, follow what it says. You will get a much better idea of what sort of speed you should be getting.
According to this I should get 6mbs on ADSL - which I was.
I should be getting 8.5mbs on ADSL2+ - I am getting 13mbs (o2). So it is quite accurate - much better than "up to 8 mbs!!"

You are much better entering in your phone number as this will give a more accurate result, entering your postcode will only give you a general speed of your area. The length of your line may be different to this and as a result your speed will be shown different.

You cannot swap exchanges unless you move to a different location that is not supported by your local exchange.

So why have I been put onto an exchange that is 4000 m from my property when there is another exchange half the distance away?

Your property was most likely connected previously to the exchange it is now connected to. If the majorty of the connections were already in place BT will enable that connection.
