Theres a cost to these cheap items and that cost is bourne by some poor intensively produced animal and also the farmer. I would rather go without and so would my family then know we were part of this practice they call 'farming'. Bring back proper farming with less intensively produced products, it would improve taste and importantly improve animal husbandry and welfare . Animals are NOT machines........
I think youre confusing animals with humans here. Animals like chickens have one main primary drive - eat food. If you put food in front of them 24/7 you have some very happy chickens and cheap food for us. Win win. If you dont agree go round with a poetry book and a bowl of corn and see which they are interested in.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

by the sounds of it......lentil soup....just before she goes out to hug trees.
wheretheresawill, im sure you will find an ANIMAL WELFARE website, if you google it, but taking the moral high ground on a money saving website is imho very idiotic0 -
Not all Mr T's seem to be doing these. I went to our local one looking for it and they didnt know anything about it.What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

Watch me shop then cos I don't . I like a drink now n then but can't afford to buy it any longer. I do care about the animals etc but at the end of the day I do not have the extra money to throw around. I didnt manage to get one of these chickens but would have done if they had had any in our local store.
I actually bought some eggs for the first time in my life a few weeks ago and it tore me up to think that I actually paid £1 plus more than I had to just so the chickens could wander about a bit. Do you actually think tho that these chickens die of old age? I'd hazard a guess they are being sold for meat in some way.
BTW there are no £4.99 chickens any longer. The ones I used to get were small at about 2.80 and now cost about £5 for a small one. Hence I can no longer afford it even if I used it for a weekend and mondays meals and soups and stocks,What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

I prefer to buy my meat from places where the ethical treatment of animals is more of a priority than getting the cheapest price for them and where they are not pumped full of hormones!
I echo what friesian said. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

Plus giving chickens too much freedom when they aren't used to it can place an unecessary burden on our bobbies on the beat.Call me Carmine....

.
That is not the case. I saw them on TV once saying you should only buy pork with the logo as it guarantees the pig was born and raised by UK pig farmers.
From their website:
How do I know where Red Tractor food and drink comes from?
More and more people are looking to buy locally produced food to support farmers and reduce the ‘food miles’ associated with transporting food over long distances. But identifying where food comes from can be difficult and labels can sometimes be misleading. Does the origin label tell you where the food was farmed or where it was processed? At AFS we have always had very clear rules on origin marks. The Union flag in the Red Tractor logo provides an independently verified consumer guarantee that the product has come from a UK farm. No doubts, no compromise.0
