wont they be worth more the longer you keep them?
Not necessarily, collecting music is a bit like playing the stock market. The kudos of the musician, the quality of their music, pressings and variations, the relative availability (cds and major distributors killed the collectors market) and newsworthiness all impact on prices. I've had studio only acetates go from £150 to £35 and seemingly innocuous 12" releases rise the other way. Records will usually hold their worth if kept extremely carefully; cd's which have a playable shelf life of 10 years will usually drop. There's always something that will buck that trend though.0 -

Are these CD's that are played, constantly or otherwise? What about CD's that are never played that are bought purely for collectors purposes, or have been played but no longer are?0 -

It depends on the cd, known as acetates on the market, these are promos from labels or the studio. Burnt onto cd-r, the shelf life is 1000 plays approximately but due to the nature of the media, will gradually break down anyway. The very early cd's were really shoddy quality and problems usually began a few years later - I had loads that just skipped for no blerdy reason. Recently they have improved but it's still too young a technology to know their proper lifespan. That coupled with the greater production numbers makes them much less desirable items to collect.0 -

:eek: I have Promo's and other basic CD's in collection. Most have never been, or will not be played.
I hope they last for a while yet!0 -

I personally keep all my CDs in their original shrinkwrap, same for vinyl but in the case of vinyl promos and singles which arent sealed i keep them in a PVC sleeve. It is mainly Eminem i collect and was shocked to see recent CD promos on ebay sell for close to and sometimes over £10. I remember the days not so long ago were Ebay would be full of them and you could pick them up for a couple of quid. Either companies are sending out less copies or hes getting more in demand..........im sure neither is the case and is probably just people not willing to part with them for any reason. Maybe the recession is just causing a lot of people to not see the point in listing anymore.
I only started getting vinyls in 2004 so ive still got a few to get in terms of a collection. Most are promos from America so its really hard finding some that are in new or unplayed condition. Ive let a few gems slip by the net recently due to money troubles and plus ive started rebuying a lot of stuff thats sealed. I only recently found out that ALL cds in the US are shrinkwrapped. I guess i figured thats the best way to prove something is truly in mint condition. So with the money i have i just try and pick up bits and pieces here and there and keep my fingers crossed that the stuff thats a bit more expensive will still be there when im done.
I honestly dont know what any of it is worth. I suppose one day id like to be told its worth a lot but i dont think id ever part with it. Im not sure about shelf life of media either. The CDR acetates are kept in sleeves....i asssume as long as their protected they will be fine. Ive got Eminem cassettes that are 11 and 12 years old still factory sealed. Never seen them on ebay or anywhere in a sealed state before and i was told shrinkwrap only really lasts 10 years before it starts warping the packaging underneath it.....these cassettes then, have lasted pretty well. I think as far as what something is worth is concerned....it really depends on the fans. Its what their willing to pay and if their happy to pay it.0 -

Hi,
Yeah a bit cheeky to try and flogg this type of stuff on eBay, although I can see his reason: The early England and Wales editions of The Sun had a Farrah Fawcett obituary on the front page, and a small 'Jacko Ill' caption at the top banner.Profit=sanity
Turnover=vanity
Greed=inhumanity:dance:0 -
yep I suppose its RARE in England ..where they have the English edition of the Sun..with "perhaps" the same story. Everyone to their own..0
