Best Smartphone on PAYG

I'm in the market for smartphone on PAYG. I have a budget of around £300 . I rarely make calls, text infrequently but mainly use mobile internet and wi-fi for browsing and email Obviously with my budget, the Iphone 3Gs is out of my range so any advice would be appreciated.

I've had both, you definitely notice a speed bump in the 3GS but, on the other hand, I remember the speed boost I got when they released the 2.1 software. A lot of these things can be improved when they tweak the software, could be that the 3G will be just about as nippy in a few months time.
