Best Smartphone on PAYG
I'm in the market for smartphone on PAYG. I have a budget of around £300 . I rarely make calls, text infrequently but mainly use mobile internet and wi-fi for browsing and email
Obviously with my budget, the Iphone 3Gs is out of my range so any advice would be appreciated.

You say the 3GS is out of your budget but perhaps the 3G isn't. A lot of early adopters are buying the 3GS on PAYG nd selling the old one with the PAYG sim card. The advantage of this is that you get a year free unlimited web browsing and all the fun of the 3.0 OS.
It's really worth looking aroundSpace for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though0 -
what about the 5800, cheap decent, symbian series 60 smart phone, could do with more information to give a recomendation really0

iPhone is not really a smartphone, it's more of a go between. It's a little smarter than the 'dumb' phones, but not a true smartphone like Symbian or Windows Mobile. No multitasking is a kind of a big set back - imagine only being able to run/use ONE program on your PC at a time!
The 5800 would be perfect for you, you can save £150 and should be able to get it for around £150 from ebay, the Ovi appstore for it is really good, Nokia maps work superbly, Garmin works wonders aswell, and the camera is pretty decent.
I use the 5800 for web browsing, iPlayer, emails etc, not so much for texting.0 -

I would expect these included for a smart phone.....my 2 yr old lg had these software built in....shame on nokia0 -
It all depends what you want a smartphone to do. There's an app for pretty much anything (they should use that as a slogan)Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though0

iphone 3gs £340...........0 -
Yeah, iPhone 3g 8gb is 340, the 3G S starts at £440.
And how is it NOT a smartphone. Apart from the fact you can get applications for it, and it supports Exchange out of the box, and multiple calendars, etc, and has probably one of the best media players available on the market. I think it really does fall into the smartphone category.
The 5800, well it's a good attempt, but no cigar in my opinion0 -
I think some people think that if you can't do a spreadsheet out the box or edit big word documents on it then it's not a smart phone. I had a Windows Mobile years ago (HTC something or another mini) which could do all that, tried it a couple of times and found it lacking. And how is it NOT a smartphone. However, I use my iphone for work all the time, esp the email with yahoo mail for a free push service. I've been in meetings where I've needed a copy of an A3 drawing (I'm an engineer) and got a pdf emailed to me by a colleague. You can then bring it up on screen, zoom in and pan around no problem. Best phone ever IMHO (at least until next year)Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though0 -
