It's intended to trip you up and get you to the till, where you sigh and pay up because you're used to being shafted by the likes of M&S.

Hi,

thats OK, just as long as M&S are providing Telepathy Helmets at the door so we can work out which are "Ready meals" and which are "deli items". :)

Apparently a portion of roast potatoes is a "ready meal", but a quiche is a "deli item". Is there any sense to this at all? Or is it just random?

Cheers,
Karen

The deli items are in the deli aisle and the packs for the offer say "selected deli items" on them. The ready meals are in the ready meal aisle and the stickers say "selected meals" (or something similar) on them.

There is of course some overlap in food definitions but generally most deli items can be eaten cold such as olives, falafel, dips, quiche, cooked chicken slices etc. Think of things you'd take on a picnic. In some cases you could heat them through such as a quiche if you wanted to.

With ready meals - and side dishes such cabbage, mash and roasties - they are generally eaten hot and as part of a main meal.

Legal compliance with regards to to making sure ticketing falls within trading standards guidelines takes someone about 3 full days a week in the store I'm at, plus section co-ordinators also have to do daily compliance checks. They devote a huge amount of resources to this, no one is out to "con" anyone as it has been put.

I suggest you e mail Sir Stuart Rose the Chairman and CEO of M & S he is very hands on and although you will get one of his PA's reply you never know what may be the end result !

stuart.rose@marks-and-spencer.com

ps He is a really nice genuine person
Nice, genuine person? Really?? He's the Chairman and CEO of a major retailer. Nice and genuine are not the usual traits of someone in that sort of position.

Ask Tony Goode whether he thinks he's kind, or 40% of the shareholders who recently tried to get him removed form his position.

Hi,

thats great in large stores.

But ours is a small store, and the food aisles are all mixed up.

If they're going to fix it, then fine.

But I still think it was a cheap trick.

Cheers,
Karen

And in many ways I agree with you - he has probably ensured its survival for the foreseeable future. But that's more to do with business acumen and ruthless determination than being nice.

Does anyone know why M&S charges extra on top of displayed price? I bought a broccoli the other day and it was like £1.99 but they added like 12 pence on top of it. It didn't say VAT on the receipt.... Isn't it 0% VAT on uncooked foods? Why don't they advertise full price in the first place??
Money is not the root of all evil.
It depends on how you obtain it and how you use it.

Have you sold your soul to the devil?

Could it have been priced at £1.99 per kg, with individual packs being different weights/prices?
