I make devils dip which is 4 tblspns mayo mixed with 2 tblspns pickle, 2 tblspns tomato ketchup and tabasco sauce to taste. I vary amounts slightly depending on how hot I want it. It should be left covered in fridge for 24 hours to let flavours develop.

I am going mad at the fact that I have realised that it is snacks that are killing any kind of budget I try to keep!

I would like to make some homemade dips....preferably with ingredients I already have.

I have lentils, split peas, bulgar wheat - will any of those be any good for making some dips? Any other ideas?

I'm going to make a sponge cake, some chocolate cripsy cakes and some cupcakes too for sweet dips.

Also does anyone have any other ideas for savoury snacks?

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

Mini quiches, little pasties, cheese straws and bread swirls always go down well in our house - good for snacking on in the evening and also handy to chuck in pack lunches to make them more interesting. Pitta or flat breads are also easy to make and then use to dip in things. A tomato salsa is quite easy to make up from finely chopped tomatoes, onion, herbs, olive oil and a slpash of red wine or balsamic vinegar or you can make a cream cheese and chive dip very easily from cream cheese (value is perfectly good for this) let down with some natural yoghurt to make it runnier and mix in chopped chives.

HTH - we do have lots of snacks in our hour and you are right they can blow the budget big style. If you have a cheapy book store near you they often have party cookbooks really cheap which have lots of ideas for buffets and this can be a good hunting ground for yummy snacks.

How many times a month do you snack? I'd just not bother.

  • Hi,

I know its not as moneysaving unless you can buy from a market etc, but fruit and veg are our go-to snacks here.

Satsumas, apples, dried fruit are all good and healthy. I can eat satsumas til there's none left though, a favourite of mine!

Carrot sticks!! My mum likes celery sticks. broccoli and cauliflower are lovely raw - try it! In season sugarsnap peas and cucumber are good as munchies.

I think if you soaked and cooked the split peas you could make a houmous-like dip. Hugh F-W made one with broad beans on this week's River Cottage.

Chickpeas are cheap to buy dried if you go to the ethnic section (don't buy them in the wholefoods bit, they're a rip off), there are plenty of recipes for proper houmous out there on the web.

If you want a quick snack, Tesco's value tortilla chips and a HM salsa go down well with guests.

Sadly DP is really fussy when it comes to peanuts...although I was thinking I could make the value ones more interesting with some spices. He's fine withe cheap pistachios and cashews...just not peanuts for some reason!

We snack constantly! I bought enough crisps last sunday to last the month and they are nearly all gone. I can't even blame DP. I have been bad to although I have been ill in my defense!

Thanks for the snack ideas. Do you have a recipe for the pasties and the cheese swirls. Those sound perfect...as do the quiches!

I'm more of a savory snack person. DP will eat savoury and sweet snacks but the sweet I have covered with cakes and things!

I will try some of those dips tomorrow as well and make up some pitta.

Thanks on the dip tip! I will try making a houmous style dip as we both love that. I love snacking on vegetables. I could quite happily sit and munch on a red pepper or carrots! DP isn't quite the same although if there is dip to go with it he will eat it!

I just want to get out of the habit of buying snacks that are quick and easy and making them instead!

Oh thank you very much. If I'm feeling better (been ill) tomorrow, I will be making lots of snacks!
