What about a big box of crackers with cheese? Very filling and can be cheap if you shop around.

OR dried bread (done in the oven so its crunchy like krispy bread snacks) with HM dips (mayo with cheese, creme fraiche with chives and cheese, mayo with garlic etc)

Or roast a chicken... split the picked off meat into 4-6-8 portions and snack on that... very filling, high in protein and low in fat if you discard the skin :) and very yummy too :)

I make a dip with mayonnaise, some tomato ketchup-enough to make mayo red and add a couple of desertspoons of pickle and then add tabasco sauce depends on how hot you like it. Tastes better if left for 24 hours before eating it.
I make it without really thinking how much I use of each ingredient.

With regards to buying crisps etc I have generally stopped. I used to buy enough for a month and when it all went in a few days and they had to wait over 3 weeks for more and nobody really missed them I stopped buying them. They are really appreciated now as a treat.

    Cheap dip?

Value cottage cheese with a touch of horseradish whizzed up in a processor. If needed, slacken is with a drop of milk.

    Very 'Slimming World' too.

I make dip all the time for parties and special occasions but it probably isn't very healthy!

    Basic Dip Mix:
    Tub of Philadelphia
    4 Tablespoons Mayo
grated onion (about half a small one)
    teaspoon Horseradish Cream
(To double quantities without changing the taste add a tin of cream)

    To this we add:
Shrimp Dip - Tube of Primula with Shrimp, Two Tablespoons Tomato Sauce

Onion/Chive - Tube of Primula with Chive, more grated onion

Curry - Favourite curry powder (beware, it gets hotter the longer you leave it)

Chili - Mild chili powder (Also gets hotter with time)

    Another dip mix:
    Pot natural yoghurt
Pot double cream of equal size
Whip cream until thick, mix in yoghurt

To this I add half a pack dried Mushroom Soup Mix (& sometimes finely chopped fresh mushrooms if I have them & maybe some ham)

I haven't tried this with anything else but keep meaning to try onion soup and I am sure there are other options.

We eat our dips with crisps, chopped veg, corn chips, pitta bread, breadsticks etc.

  • A good dip for raw veggies is a home-made version of Tzadziki: plain yoghurt mixed with some grated cucumber and garlic with some chopped parsley. I expect you could make a version with cream-cheese slackened off with milk if you've no yoghurt to hand.

Sadly DP is really fussy when it comes to peanuts...although I was thinking I could make the value ones more interesting with some spices. He's fine withe cheap pistachios and cashews...just not peanuts for some reason!

Would you be able to fool him into the value ones by decanting them into a 'peanut jar' and hiding the wrapper??? Sneaky but usually works in my house!:D

We snack constantly! I bought enough crisps last sunday to last the month and they are nearly all gone. I can't even blame DP. I have been bad to although I have been ill in my defense!

Well just by only ever buying what you need for the week you could save a load. Buy a weeks worth and once they are gone, then tough until next week! Bulk buying is only worth it IMO if you are able to be strict and eat at the same rate. I can't so it costs me more to buy those 'bigger, cheaper packs'

    .

I would also consider making sure your main meals are perhaps a little bigger/more filling so that you are less inclined to snack (well at least lessen the quantities eaten on each occasion;)) I find it easier and cheaper to bulk out meals than to provide lots of snacks. Alternatively, maybe plan your meals so that you save your pudding from dinner time to have as a snack later in the evening etc

I adore tzadziki! I can't believe I forgot it last night!!

I grate the cucumber into a sieve and salt it. Then put a saucer weighted with a heavy tin on top to squeeze out the excess water before mixing into the yoghurt. I find this improves the flavour and the keeping qualities. I use mint or dill rather than parsley, as this is how my Auntie Maria taught me.

To make an approximation of Greek yoghurt you can line a sieve or colander with muslin or a clean tea-towel. Tip in cheap value plain yoghurt and leave it overnight in the fridge. The excess water drains away and leaves you with nice thick "Greek" yoghurt. Much cheaper than Total!!

Lentil pate? Any sort of bean dip is cheap, especially when you use dried beans.
Chick pea hummus. Refriend beans made from pinto beans and a little lard, onion and garlic. Mint dip? Natural yogurt, chilli powder, paprika, lemon juice and mint sauce. Delicious with popadoms and ~50p for 500ml :D
Living cheap in central London :rotfl:
