with tom tom and garmin are the speed camera locations a free download? also are these brands of satnavs a monthly fee or one off purchase of the sat nav itself?

with garmin, the update is an annual subscription, for the geographical area one wants, and there are at least weekly updates available as a consequence.

With the price of sat navs at the moment its a bit rude not too, but i'm put off by the number of smash and grab robberies to steal these valuable items. Scum will go as far as looking for the circular rubber sucker mark on windscreen as enough reason to break your window. I can't be bothered to polish my windscreen after everyuse!

Is there any way to mount them in the airvents etc?

Brodit clips are great for fastening your satnav to the dash and don't need screws or anything like that. Check out the website for the UK supplier at https://www.dsldevelopments.com I've got one in my Scenic and used to have one in my old focus.

Sat nav is another way in which the responsibility for driving one's car appears to be diminished (in addition to cars that switch on the lights for you etc).

I have never used sat nav myself but I have been on many journeys in which the driver used sat nav. Most of the time it appeared to get us to our destination fine, although one particularly notable exception occurred when my mother's sat nav failed to recognise the M1 (??!!!) and even though I kept saying from the back of the car 'I KNOW WHICH WAY TO GO' (it is my local area) neither she nor my stepfather in the front would listen to me, determined to follow the confused sat nav to the death.

I personally get on just fine with my road map and the road signs. I very rarely get lost and I drive all over the place. Occasionally I'll take a wrong turn - so what? I just turn around and go back, or check out the map for another way back to my original route. It appears this would upset some people greatly but I've never had a problem.

I suspect the vast majority of sat nav users are sensible enough to know that the sat nav can be wrong. But we hear so many stories now of idiots driving down railway lines or off cliffs etc because they listened to their sat nav over common sense. I find it hard to believe that these people can be trusted to control their vehicle correctly and it is potentially dangerous.

Besides, I much prefer to listen to my radio or some music when driving rather than an annoying voice telling me about five times to 'turn left at the next roundabout' or whatever.
