Yes I agree with most of the posts, sat navs are a good thing to have, ok the choice of routes that my Garmin tends to give you can be a bit puzzling, but it does get you there. I always now double check routes with the AA and RAC route finders.
My biggest problem with Garmin (don't know about Tom Tom) but I have UK and Ireland maps and you cannot update just these maps, you have to have Europe as well and at a cost of nearly the price of a new machine, what a RIP OFF.

    What unit do you have?

You can get just UK & Ireland as a download or on a memory card for a Nuvi 200 for £40 for example.

It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Mine caused a lot of stress, I was one of those idiots who thought sat nav would be correct and I would be wrong, so I discarded my own intuition and ended up somewhere I didn't exactly want to be!

Not all places have adequate raod signs and in that respect a sat nav is useful, but i use mine with the sound off so it's merely a visual aid rather than something telling me exactly what to do. sadly a lot of people blindly follow directions, wasn't there someone who drove into a lake or something because the sat nav said to do so.

Ten white hairs and one chewed fingernail per 1000 miles saved. Scientifically proven by me.

Thanks old buddy, BillScarab, yes mine is a nuvi 200.
Why on earth Garmin don't add uk maps to your results list when you do a map update search, all they give you is the Europe map.
I mean a map update to me means updating the maps you already have eg UK/Ireland. But Garmin thinks a map update means adding new maps eg Europe.
Any way Thanks again for this find.
  • You'll never beat the mk1 eyeball, decent map and large helping of common sense.
  • I love my satnav, like people have said on the motorways it is not much use but in unfamiliar towns and cities is can be a godsend, provided it is always used with common sense and you check your route before you go.

I also find it extremely useful when the usual route is closed or blocked off and it recalculates a diversion.

I would never travel without it!

Spot on correct, I borrowed one, it told me to go to the end of my lane and turn right...

That right turn is so acute you wouldn't turn right there on a pushbike, let alone in a car.

Useless gimmick designed for those with more money than sense.

I disagree - have you ever driven through central London having never driven there before? The number of jams and roadworks allows me to select a route via side streets. That wouldn't be possible with a map since legally you can not read a map whilst driving .
